One of my favorite aspects of Grinnell College is the diverse atmosphere. I love the fact that your next-door neighbors may, and probably do, have a completely different background story than your own. This fosters a community that is open, interesting, and educational in far more than the academic sense. Grinnell is unique in its cultivation of diversity in that Grinnellians don't just embrace diversity, they ask questions of their peers, they listen attentively, and they are able to take that knowledge with them and incorporate it into their liberal arts education. In addition, this enthusiasm carries over into the classroom, the athletic fields, residence life, and campus life. I think one some of my most interesting and educational conversations here have been with friends that grew up in a totally different way and in a different environment than I did. These discussions encourage you to look at something in a totally different light and then allow you to bring fresh and new opinions and ideas into the academic world.
