Favorite Class - Southern African History with Professor Prevost. We had really interesting discussions in this small yet diverse class. My favorite part was the simulation that we did of the Multi-Party Negotiating Process that ended apartheid and established a new government in South Africa. The role-play showed us the numerous obstacles that societies deeply rooted in racist policies face when trying to establish peace and foster equality.
What is the best thing about Grinnell? Self-governance, which acknowledges the ability of students to handle their problems responsibly as adults, and enables students to be more independent and self-reliant.
What is the worst thing about Grinnell? As much as the concept of self-governance implies self-reliance, there are in fact many, many opportunities for advising or help. And while this is not at surface level a bad thing, it is sometimes scary to think about what that might mean in the real world after Grinnell, when the same support systems may not exist.
Why did you choose Grinnell? I really can't put words to why I love Grinnell. The community is so strong and welcoming; its a place where I truly feel like I fit in.
What was the most memorable part of your visit as a prospective student? After I had been at Grinnell for a few hours, I called my mom to tell her about the campus. She later told me that from the beginning of the conversation, she could tell that Grinnell was where I wanted to be. Feeling so comfortable, even as a prospective student, was utterly amazing.
What should every prospective student know? If you are looking for a small school with a strong sense of community, where students work hard, enjoy learning, and don’t forget to have fun, Grinnell is a fantastic place to be.
