Advice for prospective students - One of the things that I love doing is cycling. It has really given me the ability to explore Grinnell and the surrounding areas in a different way. In fact, I would really encourage prospective students to go on a walk or hop on a campus bike (the yellow ones) and take a ride around campus and the surrounding areas. The scenes are beautiful and I’ve never seen clouds anywhere else in the world the same way that I have seen them in Iowa! It has made me appreciate the beauty of Grinnell and Iowa as a whole.
Why did you choose Grinnell? I was an Early Decision applicant through the Posse Foundation, and Grinnell’s academic reputation and focus on interdisciplinary learning was what first attracted me to the college. However, after learning more about the college and talking to students about their experiences at Grinnell, I realized that it was a place that enriches both the scholar and person in each of us. I also loved the emphasis on independent thinking and learning, as well as the notion of self-governance.
What should every prospective student know? Anyone considering Grinnell should know that Grinnell is not just school, but an experience. It is a wonderful place that challenges you socially, academically, and personally. You will acquire many skills by attending Grinnell, but you have to be ready for a challenge. Students should also know that Grinnell faculty and staff really care about us as people and that while we are encouraged to be independent, we are also encouraged to reach out for help when needed and form strong ties to the community.
What was the most memorable part of your visit as a prospective student? visited Grinnell after I got admitted with the rest of my Posse. I had an amazing time getting to meet professors and getting acquainted with my new home. The most vivid recollection of that visit was going on a bakery run with other students and prospective students after staying up really late talking about Grinnell and the students. I remember getting so much valuable advice and words of encouragement and excitement. The visit definitely made realize that Grinnell was the right place for me.
What is your favorite Grinnell memory? My favorite Grinnell memory is the fact that I don’t just have one favorite memory. Some of my most vivid memories include going on bakery runs at 4 in the morning, hanging out with my floors (Main 2nd 2010-2011!), spending time with my Posse, attending a wide variety of events that Grinnell sponsors, and hanging out with the rest of student staff. One of my favorite parts of Grinnell, though, is walking from place to place on campus and always running into a friend. After three years of being a student here, I definitely consider Grinnell to be a home and place that I will love for the rest of my life.
