This years winner's
Ellen Detering Langill '67

The pursuit of knowledge is something that this alumna takes very seriously. She has developed her research and analytical skills over the years with a B.A. in classical languages from Grinnell, an M.A. in history from the University of Wisconsin, and finally a Ph.D. in American intellectual history from the University of Wisconsin in 1975. She loves learning and loves being involved in scholarship. Her passion for scholarship and teaching has lead to a career as a professor of history at the University of Wisconsin where she challenges her students to look critically at historical events.

The author of some fourteen books, this alumna has examined everything from the dynamics of litigation and legislation in territorial Wisconsin to the history of medical care in Wisconsin. Her work has garnered praise from her peers. She has received a non-fiction book award from the Council of Wisconsin Writers, a Certificate of Commendation from the American Association for State and Local History, and was nominated for a prestigious State of Wisconsin Book Award for Regional History.

She has worked tirelessly for historical preservation efforts throughout the Midwest. She is a member of the Women Historians of the Midwest and has acted as chair of the Wisconsin Board of Historic Preservation. Her community service also includes a successful tenure as president of her county United Way chapter. Helping others in her community has always been a priority for this successful scholar.

Her strengths are not only academic, but include a wonderful family that supports all of her efforts. She met her husband Ross at the North Younker Powder Puff Football Game during their first year at Grinnell. They have two daughters Kjersten and Kari. In addition, her family includes many Grinnell alums, a sister, a brother, and a sister-in-law.

This alumna has consistently supported this institution with her time and resources. We in the Alumni Association recognize the scholarship and dedication of Ellen Detering Langill, class of 1967.
