Meet the Exit 182 Staff (Spring 2008)

TylerBarreto Tyler Barreto '08

I am a senior biological chemistry major and neuroscience concentrator. I am from a small town in Indiana although it could be described as a booming metropolis in comparison to Grinnell. I work on campus as a chemistry mentor and tutor and am a Phonathon student supervisor. I have recently co founded the student group, Grinnellians for Global Health. I am also active in groups like Senior Challenge Committee, the Neuroscience Student Educational Policy Committee, and Model United Nations among others. I served as the Secretary for Student Organization of Latinos and am an active member. I am currently enjoying my last semester and the prospect of getting out of Grinnell, although I think back on everything I have learned and gained from Grinnell with fond appreciation.

MattieBrown Mattie Brown '08

I'm a senior physics major. My extra-curricular activities include serving as Chartering President of Future Black Law Students Association and a peer mentor. After graduation, I hope to attain a position with the United States Patent and Trademark Office as a patent examiner for a year or two and continue to law school to pursue a career in patent law.

AngelaCao Angela Cao '11

Hi! My name is Angela Cao and I'm a first year from Louisville, Kentucky. I am involved in the Student Alumni Association, Free the Planet, ASIA, and concerts at Grinnell. I enjoy being with my friends, being outside, the stars, good music, and laughing.

FonzJenkins Fernando "Fonz" Jenkins '10

My name is Fernando F. Jenkins. However, most people here at Grinnell call me Fonz. I am a second year political science major from Little Rock, Arkansas. I participate in two varsity sports here at Grinnell, the Men's football team and the Men's indoor and outdoor Track and field program. I work at Phonathon and in the PEC for work-study. Some of my hobbies include: making people laugh, listening, and asking questions that require well thought out answers. I also love to travel and most of all I love the liberal arts education that I am receiving at Grinnell College.

LoraleiKelly Loralei Kelly '08

I'm a senior from Pittsburgh, PA double majoring in computer science and psychology. I'm on the psychology SEPC and part of the campus Unitarian Universalist group. In the past I've played clarinet in the Grinnell Symphony Orchestra, co-led the campus chapter of Amnesty International, and participated in the Grinnell Monologues. These days, if I'm not doing homework you can probably find me knitting or playing spider solitaire.

EmilyKugasaki Emily Kugasaki '09

Emily is a third-year Philosophy major, and is also on track to receive her teaching certificate. She hopes to teach high school world history and sexual education after she leaves Grinnell. Besides her involvement in FTP, Emily is an active member in Social Entrepreneurs of Grinnell, a microfinance group on campus. When she's not doing homework, Emily enjoys making crafts, watering her plants, and thinking about her dog named Tuesday.

SarahMirk Sarah Mirk '08

I'm a senior history major interested in comics, cities and recipes for soup. Her current plan for after graduation is no plan at all

Barbara Monaco Barbara Monaco '10

My name is Barbara Monaco and I am a second year from the distant city of Des Moines, IA. I am a declared math major who is obsessed with theatre and statistics and I have done cartoons for the B&S, the Sequence (which I am currently co-editor of), and of course Exit 182. I have been drawing cartoons and comics from a very young age and I'm very grateful to the editors of Exit 182 to give me the chance to show off my artwork. Hope you enjoy them!

JacquesN Jacques Nguyen '10

Jacques Nguyen is a second year biochemistry and French major. In his spare time (which is partially inexistent), he enjoys playing guitar and ukulele, sketching and painting, as well as composing lyrics. He will be studying abroad next semester in Aix-en-Provence, France; hopefully, he will get a chance to do some sight-seeing. Also, he forgot to say that he is a surfer from Hawaii who was born in Paris, but sadly was not francophone (actually, he just remembered).

ChristianRicci Christian Ricci '08

As a senior, people tell me, "Christian Ricci '08, it's time you left this place called Grinnell and whittled out your own little nook in the big, cold, scary world." "But what would I do?" I respond. "Well, you could be a butler, or a caretaker of trained falcons, or a sitcom actor, or a pro badminton player, or the Norwegian correspondent for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune newspaper, or a community leader, or an outer space explorer. After all, you do major in theatre." "Wow," I say. "Those are all the things I want to do."

EricRohn Eric Rohn '08

My name is Eric Rohn and I am a senior Music major from Northfield Minnesota. I am also studying Weimar Republic Cinema as part of a Western European Studies concentration and seeking an education license in secondary World History. In addition to my studies I am involved in the student run radio station KDIC, the campus musicians organization Freesound, and many activities through the Office of College and Alumni Relations. Being at Grinnell has shown me any amazing community of passionate, involved, and brilliant people and I am trying to enjoy every minute of the College before I graduate in May.

ASample Anastasia Sample '10

My name is Anastasia Sample and I am a sophomore, double majoring in art and Spanish. I am an SA on East campus, one of the co-editors for the Sequence, a member of the Student Organization of Latinos/Latinas, and a teacher for an art EXCO course. I also work as a Lifeguard and a teacher's helper at an elementary school. I love drawing, drinking green tea, swimming, yoga, volunteering, learning and attempting to speak Spanish. My dream is to one day see the ocean and swim with dolphins all while looking good in my bikini.

CatUpdegrove Cat Updegrove '11

I came to Grinnell to explore small-town culture and interact with these crazy Grinnellians around me. I'm a pretty passionate person (that's a lot of P's!), especially when it comes to developing relationships and helping others, which I intend to make a career of. Of course, Grinnellians are always busy, but if I did have down time I'd enjoy it by reading Jane Austen, taking a road trip down old country roads, or editing my iPhoto library. I love exploring new places, people and ideas- you can just call me Sherlock Holmes!

JamieZ Jamie Zwiebel '08

My name is Jamie Zwiebel. I'm a senior Spanish major with a concentration in Global Development Studies, and I'm from Metuchen, New Jersey (spare me the "armpit of America" jokes). In addition to offering clean Iowa air and starry skies, Grinnell has given me the opportunity to explore many activities, ranging from service work to creative writing to musical ensembles to religious and multicultural groups. I have loved my time in Iowa and the people I've met at Grinnell. Next year I'll be pursuing a Master's degree in Public Health, after which I plan to serve as a bridge between underserved communities and the institutions with the resources to serve them. I also plan to continue working with women's sewing microbusinesses and fundraising for a newly constructed medical clinic located in San Ramón, Nicaragua. Please contact me at jamie.zwiebel@gmail.com if you know a group that is interested in financially supporting or volunteering their time towards these sustainable, highly-effective, and exciting project s.
