Whether he's helping lead the Concerned Black Students organization, crocheting projects in the old Forum Grill, or spending time with kids as a coordinator of Alternative Happy Hour, this student radiates "intellectual vibrancy and personal daring." An active and influential member of the campus community, he has served as a student advisor, campus tour guide, and forum panelist. He is treasurer of Grinnell Multicultural Alliance and is the only male member of the Grinnell "Sit 'n Knit" group. He has made an enormous impact on Alternative Happy Hour, a weekly event that brings together college students and low income kids. Among his many contributions to the program, he has secured significant support and resources to provide books for the young children who participate in the organization. While he has dedicated his time primarily to local causes, he has also shown a wider vision: through a summer internship in Ecuador, he used his talents to help a local community reform its education curriculum. And no m
atter what project he takes on, he does it with energy, enthusiasm, and joy. We are pleased to honor Alvin S. Irby '07 for his generous spirit, strong vision, and commitment to making positive changes in a community, one life at a time.
