Purpose: A career exploration experience for current Grinnell students allowing a student to shadow and observe an alumnus at work.
Process: Alumni contact the Career Development Office to express interest in becoming an externship sponsor. Opportunities are advertised to students, who then apply to the CDO. The Externship Program takes place during Grinnell Collegeˇ¦s academic breaks, and externship sponsors may specify when they will offer an externship site. During the externship, the selected student shadows the alumnus at work and, when possible, works on a small project to gain further insight into the operation of the organization and career field. The student typically lives with the alumnus during the 3-7 day externship.
Cost: The cost to alumni sponsors is negligible. Alumni usually provide lodging and meals to the student in their home and transportation to the worksite.
