The principal responsibility of a class fund director (CFD) is to connect to classmates a sense of philanthropy for Grinnell College. CFDs send regular fundraising letters to classmates, coordinate class fundraising, and help coordinate and plan Reunion Weekend. Because of the progressive nature of these responsibilities, length of service and frequency of communication with your class is important.
Role: The tradition of the class fund director (CFD) as a formal role within the College alumni community dates back to the 1970s. The tradition of alumni involvement goes back to 1910. Today, there are over 70 CFDs serving 61 classes. Typically there is one CFD per class, though co-CFDs are encouraged when there is a desire to share the workload with a classmate. Guest writers also provide renewed excitement for the CFD and offer a different perspective to classmates.
The work of a CFD and correspondence with classmates provides crucial services:
- Promotes a positive attitude toward the College through factual, informative communication.
- Keeps classmates connected to Grinnell through detailed and regular communication coordinated with the College, class agent, Asa Turner chair, and class committee members.
- Connects classmates to Grinnell by encouraging them to make a gift.
Peer to peer outreach is one of the cornerstones of the College's success with the Pioneer Fund. It is important for a CFD to show support for Grinnell College by giving a monetary gift to be counted with the class. A CFD must be an advocate for the College he or she believes in and a gift is a tangible way to show support and to enhance credibility in asking for someone else to give.
