What is the Pioneer Fund? Two to three million dollars of the money spent by Grinnell College every year to benefit students comes from the Pioneer Fund. The Pioneer Fund team solicits this money in the form of gifts from alumni, friends, parents, students, faculty, staff, corporations, and others, because Grinnell College is a non-profit organization.
Can I dedicate my gift to someone?
Yes! You are welcome to donate in honor or memory of someone you would like to honor with your gift.
How can I support the Pioneer Fund?
There are different avenues used to make a gift to the Pioneer Fund.
What are the giving levels of the Pioneer Fund?
All giving is used to recognize donors in gift club levels. The giving levels are:
| Rosenfield Fellow | $50,000 and greater |
| Trustee Circle | $25,000 to $49,999 |
| Laurus Nobilis | $10,000 to $24,999 |
| Iowa Band | $5,000 to $9,999 |
| Pioneer Circle | $2,500 to $4,999 |
| Presidents' Club | $1,500 to $2,499 |
| Young Alumni Presidents' Club (classes of 1998 to 2011) | $750 to $1,499 |
| Scarlet and Black Circle | $500 to $1,499 |
| James J. Hill Society | $162 to $499 |
| Honor Roll | $1 to $161 |
Every fiscal year two adjustments are made to the giving levels. First, the minimum
gift for the James J. Hill Society increases by one dollar commemorating the number of
years since the College's founding in 1846. Second, the class years of those
eligible for the Young Alumni Presidents' Club change to include current students and
alumni who have graduated in the most recent ten years.
Why is it important to give to the Pioneer Fund annually?
Money from the Pioneer Fund is spent in full every year, and consistent support from
donors makes it easier for the College to improve its services while maintaining relative
costs to students.
The College operates on a fiscal year that begins each July 1 and ends each June 30.
How are gifts to the Pioneer Fund used?
Any money given to the Pioneer Fund is part of Grinnell College's yearly operating budget.
It helps to pay for:
- financial aid;
- student government, groups, and programming;
- social and cultural events;
- research, internship, and study-abroad opportunities;
- outstanding faculty and dedicated staff;
- and many of the other worthwhile expenses that Grinnell College has each year.
Does the Pioneer Fund raise money for buildings?
No. Money for the 'bricks and mortar' for new buildings comes from strategic reserves
and from private donations specifically for that purpose. The Pioneer Fund does support
the maintaining of these bulidings.
