The Grinnell College baseball team gave unbeaten Ramapo College all it could handle Monday, but in the end the Pioneers fell 2-1 in 10 innings and then 12-10 at Myrtle Beach, Fla.
In the opener, Grinnell got a solid pitching effort from Will Pahos ’14. He scattered five hits and gave up one unearned run in 7 2/3 innings.
Grinnell’s lone run came in the third inning when Drew Davis ’13 doubled to center field, moved to third on a single by Jackson Markey ’14 and stole home.
Ramapo scored solo runs in the seventh and 10th innings.
In the second game, Grinnell had a furious rally fall short in the two-run setback. Matt Skelly ’12 had two hits for Grinnell.
Ramapo scored a run in the first inning, two in the second and three in the third for a 6-0 lead. The Pioneers struck for three runs in the bottom of the third with the aid of Mike Nodzenski’s ’12 RBI single.
Ramapo added to its lead, though, scoring five runs in the fifth and another in the seventh for a 12-3 edge.
That’s when the Pioneers’ bats came to life, as they rapped out four hits and scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh. Billy Mayberry ’14 had an RBI single to right, Jackson Markey ’14 plated two more runs with a single and Colin Tremblay ’14 belted a three-run triple to center field.
Tremblay later scored on a wild pitch before Ramapo got the final out. Jason Ormond ’13 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell.
Ramapo improved to 9-0 overall with the sweep, while Grinnell fell to 2-7.
