The Grinnell College women’s and men’s cross country teams are both ranked in the NCAA Division III Central Region rankings compiled by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The Pioneer men, fresh off winning their own Les Duke Invitational, moved up from sixth to fifth. Grinnell’s women, unranked at the start of the season, enter at the No. 9 spot.

For the second year in a row, the Grinnell College men’s cross country team claimed top honors at its own Les Duke Invitational.

The Pioneers tallied 70 points to edge North Iowa Community College by two points in the eight-team race at Oakland Acres Golf Club Saturday. Bethel University was third with 79 points and Wartburg took fourth with 85.

Erik Figge ’13 (pictured) raced to a 16th-place finish to lead the Grinnell College men’s cross country team at the Central College Dutch Invitational Saturday morning at Pella.

Figge had a time of 20:37.1. He was followed closely by teammates Frank Canady ’14 (17th in 20:37.2), Griffin Smith ’12 (19th in 20:48.0); Ben Tyler ’14 (20th in 20:48.1) and Evan Griffith ’15 (21st in 20:52.9).

The Grinnell College men’s cross country team is coming off a stellar season, and the Pioneers are looking to continue that trend in 2011.

The Grinnell College men’s cross country, coming off a strong 2010 campaign, is sixth in the NCAA Division III Central Region rankings compiled by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

In 2010, the Pioneers not only won yet another Midwest Conference title, but also claimed the Central Region crown.
