In high school Michael was a three time letter winner for football and a two time letter winner for weight lifting. His junior year was honorable mention all-district and 1st team all conference his senior year. In 04 he was offensive lineman of the year, and in 05 he was offensive MVP, in 2005-2006 he was scholar athlete of the year at Seminole High School.

Michael first two years at Grinnell he played all ten games at right tackle, in his third year he played all ten games at right guard. Entering his senior year he is projected to play center for the Pioneers.
