Arrival information

As a GOOP participant, you will be arriving at Grinnell almost a week prior to most students. Please realize that this is has some scheduling implications as well as special rules that apply. You should receive an essential student/early arrival letter which spells these policies out in clear detail, however, the following should give you a fairly clear idea of the basic arrival procedures.

Check in and room keys: One of the first things you will need to do when arriving, is get your room key and check in. If you arrive here before 6:00 pm., (which we strongly suggest you try to do), you can do this at the Joe Rosenfield Campus Center on the second floor. If you arrive before 5:00, we strongly suggest you get your student I.D. card, the Pioneer Card at the office of dining services which is located on the same floor. If you arrive after 6:00. you need to check in at the office of Security which is located at the corner of East and 10th. You can get a temporary Pioneer card here which you will need to return after getting your permanent card later. If you have questions about rooming, or check-in procedures, please address them to the Office of Student Affairs at 641-269-3700. The map below has the Campus Center indicated in red, and Security in green (in the Northeast corner):

Shuttles from the airport: If you will be arriving by air and need a shuttle from the Des Moines Airport, please see the shuttle schedule and shuttle form and sign up. Contact the Office of Facilities Management at 641-269-3300 if you have any questions regarding airport shuttles.

Meals: The first meal on your meal plan is Dinner the evening of your arrival. The campus dining hall is located in the Joe Rosenfield Center. We will try to have one of the GOOP leaders, probably wearing a GORP T-shirt meet interested people in the lobby area at 6:30 pm. If you need lunch or are looking for a place to go out with your parents, here are some suggestions:

  • Located on 6th Avenue, south of campus and west:
    • Pizza Hut: at the corner of Broad and 6th.
    • Kelcey's: Sort of bistro atmosphere close to campus on 6th S. side between Main and Broad.
    • Maid Rite: Specializes in loose hamburgers in a diner atmosphere. Fast service.
  • Located on 6th S. side between Main and West., a block down from Kelcey's.
    • Subway: Located at the NE corner of 6th and West.
    • West Side Diner: Diner located west on 6th at the edge of town.
  • Downtown sit-down restaurants include:
    • Michaels: Pasta, Pizza, etc. located on 5th between main and West, south side.
    • Grinnell Coffee Co: Coffee, sandwiches and salads. Located on Main Street, west side between 4th and 5th.
    • Lanskys: Sandwiches in a nice sit down setting. Main street, east side, up stairs between 4th and 5th.
  • Two of the nicer restaurants in town are:
    • Cafe Phoenix: located at the corner of Park and 4th in an old Victorian home.
    • Depot Crossing: A block south of Cafe Phoenix, also on Park.

Moving into your room: If you need assistance moving in, please contact the GORP Director, David Zeiss, zeiss@grinnell.edu and give us an estimated time of arrival. We'll try our best to have one of the trip leaders meet you at check-in and help you move in. Feel free to move in as soon as you have checked in. Just be sure to make the 8:00 meeting.

8:00 pm meeting: This will be a short, but important meeting to go over the schedule and address other important information. Parents are welcome to attend this meeting. Weather permitting; there will be an optional walk to a local ice cream snack bar. This is optional and for participants only. It's a great way to begin to know the other GOOP participants and we recommend it as a time to transition from arrival and family to college life and trip participants. Bring a few bucks for a treat if you wish to join. The following day will be filled with training including canoe skills, first aid & safety, equipment use and other topics. Your time will be fairly filled for the next week.
