Arseneault's snaps career assists record as Grinnell men's basketball team tops Carroll
Alt Text

On a day when David Arseneault '09 etched his name in the Grinnell College men's basketball record book, the Pioneers rolled past Carroll College 108-93 in a Midwest Conference game Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.

Arseneault became the school's all-time assists leader, as he dished out 14 to increase his total to 464. That breaks the previous mark of 459 by Jeff Boyle from 1992-96. The win keeps Grinnell perfect in the league at 2-0 while moving to 5-1 overall. Carroll fell to 1-1 in the MWC and 3-3 overall.

Arseneault wasn't the only one getting it done for Grinnell, even though he had a double-double that also included 17 points. Keith Chamberlain '08 had a monstrous game, also recording a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds to go along with six blocked shots.

John Grotberg '09 led the winners in scoring with 27 points, including seven treys, while also tallying four steals. Bobby Long '09 added 17 points, while Mike Schmidt '08 and Ahmed Idrissa '09 scored 12 each. Two players had 17 points for Carroll.

Grinnell trailed just once in the game, that being 13-12, before going on a 9-3 run to take a 22-15 cushion. Chamberlain began the spurt with a layup, Long drained a 3-pointer and Idrissa scored five straight points on a bucket and trey. Grinnell kept rolling, going up by 12 before a Carroll run made it a four-point game at 35-31 with 6:19 left in the first half.

However, a 12-2 run over the next few minutes gave Grinnell some breathing room at 47-33. Chamberlain and Grotberg both had five points during the spurt to spark Grinnell to a 57-37 halftime lead. After trailing by quite a bit much of the second half, Carroll had one last gasp and came within 81-76 with 8:47 to go. But the hosts countered with an 8-2 run to hold off the visitors and coast to victory.

Grinnell travels to Monmouth College on Wednesday before finishing out the 2007 portion of its slate on Dec. 8 when North University of Minneapolis visits.
