The Grinnell College men's basketball team stayed perfect in Midwest Conference play Wednesday night by beating Monmouth College 100-80.
With the win, Grinnell improved to 3-0 in the league and 6-1 in all games. Monmouth dipped to 0-3 and 0-6.
Grinnell never trailed in the game, which began with Bobby Long '09 (pictured) draining a 3-pointer. Long finished with a game-high 34 points with the aid of eight 3-pointers while John Grotberg '09 chipped in with 29 to go along with five steals. David Arseneault '09 added 11 points and seven assists while Keith Chamberlain '08 grabbed 12 rebounds.
Even though Grinnell never trailed, the contest was still tight at 15-12 before the Pioneers all but put things away with a 22-4 run. Long had nine points during the spurt, which put the Pioneers ahead 37-16 with 10:12 left in the half, all on 3-pointers. Grotberg added seven points during the run. Grinnell went on to lead 62-38 at the break and never looked back.
Monmouth had two players score in double figures, Joe Terwelp with 15 and Kyle Cook with 14.
Grinnell finishes out the 2007 portion of its slate Saturday when North Central University of Minneapolis visits Darby Gymnasium. Game time is 1 p.m.
