Sparked by a balanced scoring attack, the Grinnell College men’s basketball team shook off a slow start to knock off Monmouth College 87-75 Wednesday night at Darby Gymnasium.

The Pioneers trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half before whittling the gap to 44-41 by intermission. The hosts then outscored Monmouth 46-31 in the second half to improve to 13-3 in the Midwest Conference and 17-3 overall.

A late burst by St. Norbert College sent the host Green Knights to a 97-96 men’s basketball win over Grinnell College on Saturday.

Grinnell, 12-3 in the Midwest Conference and 16-3 overall, led 91-82 with 5:37 left before St. Norbert closed out the game with a 15-5 run. Brandon Gries hit the game-winning free throw with 1.8 seconds left.

The Grinnell College men’s basketball team dropped a 105-96 decision at Ripon College Friday night in Midwest Conference action.

Griffin Lentsch ’13 led Grinnell with 25 points, including seven 3-pointers, while Matt Skelly ’12 had 20 points and Patrick Maher ’14 scored 12. Maher had a double-double, also coming up with 10 assists as well as seven rebounds.

In an earlier meeting with Knox College, the Grinnell College men’s basketball team led by just a point at halftime before pulling away to victory.

The Pioneers made sure that scenario didn’t repeat itself Tuesday as they bolted out to an 11-0 lead and never looked back in a 128-87 Midwest Conference victory at Darby Gymnasium.

In a battle of the league’s best, the Grinnell College men’s basketball team emerged victorious Saturday afternoon by winning 98-92 at Lake Forest College.

The victory extended Grinnell’s best start in school history to 15-1 as the Pioneers moved into a first-place tie with the Foresters in the Midwest Conference standings at 11-1.

Now off to its best start in school history, the Grinnell College men’s basketball team geared up for its biggest game of the campaign with a 102-90 come-from-behind victory at Monmouth College Wednesday night.

The Pioneers are now a program-best 14-1 on the season while improving to 10-1 in the Midwest Conference. They’ll take that mark into Saturday afternoon’s contest at Lake Forest College, a team that is 11-0 in the league.

The Grinnell College men’s basketball team tied its best start in program history after defeating Lawrence University 98-74 Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.

Grinnell is now 13-1 overall while moving to 9-1 in the Midwest Conference. The 13-1 mark is the same as the Pioneers achieved in the 2003-04 season.

Griffin Lentsch ’13 (pictured) of the Grinnell College men's basketball team Friday night as the Pioneers sailed by Beloit College 117-84 at Darby Gymnasium.

Lentsch scored a game-high 27 points with the aid of 5-of-9 shooting from 3-point land to surpass the 1,000-point mark for his career, the 21st Pioneer to accomplish that feat. He now has 1,016 points with still a season-and-a-half to go.

The Grinnell College men’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2011-12 campaign Saturday afternoon, falling 109-106 to Carroll University in Waukesha, Wis.

The Pioneers, who are 11-1 overall and 7-1 in the Midwest Conference, got a big game from Patrick Maher ’14. He had 29 points, with the help of 3-of-7 shooting from 3-point range, and also had team-highs of nine rebounds and five assists.
