Ben Tyler ’14 of Grinnell College earned All-Region honors by placing 23rd at the NCAA Division III Central Region Men’s Cross Country Championships Saturday in Waverly.

Tyler had a clocking of 26:06.3. Following him in Grinnell’s lineup were Erik Figge ’13, who was 53rd in 26:37.5, and Nathan Kakazu ’13, who placed 76th in 27:06.1

Grinnell College battled Lawrence University to an exciting finish in the men’s portion of the 2011 Midwest Conference Cross Country Championships at Ripon, Wis., on Saturday.

But in the end, Lawrence eked out a 51-53 victory over the Pioneers to snap the latter’s 14-year title streak at the meet.

The Grinnell College cross country teams will aim at taking home the championship trophies Saturday when they compete at the 2011 Midwest Conference Championships in Ripon, Wis.

Grinnell’s men are shooting for their 15th consecutive league crown, while the women are looking to regain the title they lost to St. Norbert College last season.

Battling a strong field that included nationally- and regionally-ranked teams, the Grinnell College men’s cross country squad was 25th among 47 colleges at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational Saturday at Lake Breeze Golf Course.

Ian McCallum-Cook ’12 (pictured) led the way for the Grinnell College men’s cross country team Saturday at the Dan Huston Invitational hosted by Wartburg College.

McCallum-Cook was 98th place in 29:26. Ben Burt ’13 was Grinnell’s other runner in the race, finishing 140th in 30:59.

The individual champ in the 174-runner field was Simpson’s Ryan Edwardson, who finished in 25:35. Loras won the team title, beating Augustana 63-72....

Erik Figge ’13 (pictured) was the top performer for the Grinnell College men’s cross country team Saturday, posting a 51st-place finish in a loaded field at the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota.

Figge had a time of 26:52.3. Not far behind him was Ben Tyler ’14, who was 57th in 27:02.5.

Nate Kakazu13 took 86th in 27:21.0, Sam Krauth ’14 placed 102nd in 27:36.4 and Griffin Smith ’12 was 120th in 27:48.8...

Harry Maher ’15 (pictured) led the way for the Grinnell College men’s cross country team at the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational hosted by Augustana College Friday at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Ill.

Maher finished 114th in the 403-runner field in 27:05.3. Next in line for Grinnell were Chris Gallo ’14, who was 167th in 27:53.3, and Doug Anderson ’15, 169th in 27:54.7.

Grinnell College’s Frank Canady '14 (Iowa City, Iowa/West) has been named the Midwest Conference Men’s Cross Country Performer of the Week.

Canady had an impressive showing at Grinnell College’s own Les Duke Invitational Saturday, placing second in a field of 135 runners. He ran the 8-kilometer race in 26:27 and was just two seconds behind the champion. His efforts helped Grinnell win the team title for the second year in a row.

The Grinnell College women’s and men’s cross country teams are both ranked in the NCAA Division III Central Region rankings compiled by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The Pioneer men, fresh off winning their own Les Duke Invitational, moved up from sixth to fifth. Grinnell’s women, unranked at the start of the season, enter at the No. 9 spot.

For the second year in a row, the Grinnell College men’s cross country team claimed top honors at its own Les Duke Invitational.

The Pioneers tallied 70 points to edge North Iowa Community College by two points in the eight-team race at Oakland Acres Golf Club Saturday. Bethel University was third with 79 points and Wartburg took fourth with 85.
