Grinnell College's Pete Kieselbach '10 (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) has been named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar.

To be eligible for the honor, an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke-average under 79.0, and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2.

A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.

Pete Kieselbach '10 (pictured) earned all-conference honors, finishing fourth at the Midwest Conference Men's Golf Championships while leading the Pioneers to a fourth-place tie in the process.

Kieselbach had a three-day score of 231 as the Pioneers had a team score of 956, which tied them with Knox. Grinnell actually had the best two-round score over the final two days of the tourney, shooting a 306 on Friday and 319 on Saturday for a 625.

Alex McDonald '11 was next in line for Grinnell with a 240, which put him in a tie for 12th. R.J. Roewe' 09 was 20th with a 246, Peter Marsho '12 tied for 24th with a 250, Eric Ragan '12 tied for 26th with a 252 and Carlous Lu '10 tied for 28th at 253.

Mark Strain of Illinois College was the individual champ with a 222 and Monmouth College won the team crown with a 943.

The Grinnell College men's golf team used a strong effort on Friday, May 1, to get back into the hunt in the 2009 Midwest Conference Championships at Aldeen Golf Course in Rockford, Ill.

The Pioneers recorded a score of 306 - best of any team in the two days of the tourney - to move from seventh place to fourth in the team standings. Grinnell is now at 637, just three strokes behind second-place Carroll University's 634. Monmouth College maintained its lead and is at 624.

Pete Kieselbach '10, one of four Pioneers to score in the 70s on Friday, is Grinnell's top individual. His score of 2-over-par 74 helped him move from 17th place to a tie for fourth entering the final day of competition. He is now at 155.

Alex McDonald '11 is tied for 14th, as his score of 78 put him at 160 for the tourney, while R.J. Roewe '09 carded a 75 on Friday to sit at 162 for the tourney, good for an 18th-place tie. Grinnell's other scorer in the 70s was Carlos Lu '10, who had a 79 and is now tied for 23rd with a 164.

Rounding out Grinnell's lineup on Friday were Eric Ragan '12, who had an 85 and is tied for 29th at 169, and Peter Marsho '12, who had an 86 and is tied for 31st with a 170. Mark Strain of Illinois College and Mike Modenhauer of Ripon College are tied for first individually with 151s.

The tourney finishes up on Saturday, with the champion earning an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.

Grinnell College is in seventh place following the opening day of the Midwest Conference Men’s Golf Championships at Aldeen Golf Club in Rockford, Ill.

The Pioneers fired a score of 331 on Thursday, April 30, and were led by Pete Kieselbach ‘10, who had rounds of 38 and 43 for an 81. That put him in a tie for 17th place. Alex McDonanld ‘11 is tied for 19th after rounds of 38 and 44 for a score of 82.

Peter Marsho ‘12 and Eric Ragan ‘12 are both tied for 25th with 84s, as Marsho had scores of 43 and 41 and Ragan rounds of 41 and 43. Carlos Lu ‘10 is tied for 30th with an 85 (43 and 42) and R.J. Roewe ‘09 is tied for 37th with an 87 (42 and 45).

Mark Strain of Illinois College is the individual leader with a 75, while Monmouth College is the team leader with a score of 314. The tourney continues Friday and wraps up Saturday.

After enjoying a successful season to date, the Grinnell College men's golf team will take aim at the 2009 Midwest Conference Championships on Thursday through Saturday at Aldeen Golf Course in Rockford, Ill.

Pioneer golfers have already accounted for several of the league's top 18-hole rounds on the season. Peter Marsho '12 has a season-best score of 72, which is tied for second in the conference and just one stroke out of first place. Pete Kieselbach '10 has a season-best score of 74, which is tied for eighth, while Jeff Kljaich '11 has a 75 to his credit and Alex McDonald '11 and R.J. Roewe '09 have 76s.

Grinnell finished third at last year's league meet with a 986, 16 strokes behind champion Knox College. Monmouth College finished second at 976.
2009 Midwest Conference Championships release

Peter Marsho '12 and Pete Kieselbach '10 earned high finishes to spark the Grinnell College men's golf team at the Scot-Fire Invitational meet Saturday, April 25, at Gibson Wood Country Club in Monmouth, Ill.

Marsho recorded a two-day score of 5-over-par 149, going 72 on the first day and 77 the second. That put him in a fourth-place tie. Kieselbach tied for seventh with a 150, going 74 and 76.

R.J. Roewe '09 tied for 33rd with a 160 (80-80), Alex McDonald '11 tied for 42nd at 163 (83-80) and Carlos Lu '10 tied for 50th with a 168 (86-82).

As a team, Grinnell finished sixth with a 622. The Pioneers had a 309 on the first day and 313 the second. Central College, behind individual champ Joel Winters' 143, won the team title with a 601.

Grinnell had a second team in the event, and that squad placed 13th with a 686 (351-335), Eric Ragan '12 led the team with a 161, going 83-78, to tie for 35th.

Marsho was the tourney leader after the opening-day with an even-par 72, while Kieselbach was a close second at 74. Rounding out Grinnell's "Black Team" were R.J. Roewe '09 with an 80, Alex McDonald '11 with an 83 and Carlos Lu '10 with an 86.

That squad is just six strokes behind first-place Millikin, which had a 303. Monmouth College is second at 304, followed by Central College and Black Hawk Community College with 308s.

The Grinnell "Red Team" was led by Eric Ragan's '12 score of 83. Jeff Kljaich '11 added an 87, Salil Kalghatgi '12 had an 88, Ethan Kenvarg '12 scored a 93 and Kale Knisley '11 recorded a 96.

"We're six shots off the lead and five shots behind arch-rival Monmouth, and we have the No. 1 and 2 golfers after the first day," said Grinnell coach Brian Jaworski. "Special mention needs to go out to Peter Marsho, who is easily one of the more mentally-tough college athletes that I have coached in any sport. Likewise, Pete Kieselbach for the last three years and again today willed his team to play its best, leading by example. Both guys make their teammates better."

Jaworski said those performances on Friday will spark the team heading into the final day of the tourney.

"I'd love to see them (Marsho and Kieselbach) tie for the title, but knowing both of them, it's game-on tomorrow," he said. "Tomorrow is an important day for the entire team. We're still looking for the top six to go to the conference meet and give it a determined effort."

The tourney concludes on Saturday at Gibson Wood Golf Club in Monmouth, Ill. Action begins at 9 a.m.

Grinnell College's Alex McDonald '11 has been named the Midwest Conference Men's Golf Performer of the Week.

McDonald, from Alton, Ill. (Alton HS), fired a career-best score of 5-over-par 77 on the opening day of the Buena Vista Invitational at Storm Lake, Iowa, and bettered that the next day with a 76 to lead the Pioneers with a 153.

Pete Kieselbach '10 (pictured) came through with a huge showing for the Grinnell College men's golf team Monday, tying for second place with a 5-over-par 76 at the Duhawk Spring Invitational hosted by Loras College on Monday, April 20, at Thunder Hills Country Club in Peosta.

Kieselbach, who was just one shot out of the top spot, had rounds of 41 and 35 to help guide the Pioneers to third place in the team standings with a score of 326. Next in line for Grinnell after Kieselbach was Alex McDonald '11, who tied for 11th with an 81 (42-39) and R.J. Roewe '09, who tied for 16th with an 84 (40-44).

Rounding out the Pioneers were Kale Knisley '11, who was 19th with an 85 (40-45) and Salil Kalghatgi '12, who tied for 29th with an 89 (43-46). Kunal Bansal '12 golfed as an individual for Grinnell and tied for 25th with an 87 (41-46).

Wartburg College won the team title with a 313 and the individual champ was Mark Dolphin of Loras, who had a 75.

The Pioneers travel to the Fighting Scot-Prairie Fire Invitational this coming weekend. The meet is hosted by Monmouth College and Knox College.

The Grinnell College men's golf team enjoyed one of its best outings ever Saturday, as seven Pioneers recorded scores in the 70s as the Pioneers wrapped up a successful outing at the Buena Vista University Spring Invitational on Saturday, April 18, in Storm Lake.

Alex McDonald '11 (pictured) led the way for the Pioneers with a score of 153 after shooting rounds of 77 and 76 on the par-72 course. That put him in a tie for 33rd place.

Pete Kieselbach '10 and Peter Marsho '12 each tied for 41st with scores of 154, as Kieselbach shot 78 and 76 and Marsho 75 and 79. Carlos Lu '10 tied for 81st with a 162 (85 and 77) and R.J. Roewe '09 tied for 89th with a 164 (85 and 79).

As a team, Grinnell had a 623 after firing a 315 on Friday and 308 Saturday. That was good for 12th place. The winner was Luther College with a 585.

Grinnell also had a second team in the event, and that squad finished 17th with a 662. Jeff Kljaich '11 led the way with a 160 (85 and 75), which put him in a tie for 76th, while Salil Kalghatgi '12 tied for 86th with a 163 (84 and 79).

"We brought 10 guys to Storm Lake to help us build momentum as a team, and today seven of the 10 posted scores in the 70s, with all five guys who played as the top squad leading the way," said Grinnell coach Brian Jaworski. "Obviously, Alex's two-day total is impressive and needs to be recognized because he shot back-to-back career low scores, and we're all very proud and happy for him.

"However, Alex and the rest of the guys did more for this team this weekend than post low scores," he added. "We have begun to expect good results because we are talented, we train hard, stick together on and off the course and believe each other can get it done."
Final Results

Grinnell College's Peter Marsho '12 fired a 3-over-par 75 to lead the way for the Pioneers at the Buena Vista University Spring Invitational golf meet on Friday, April 17.

Marsho had rounds of 37 and 38 and is tied for 20th. He is followed by Alex McDonald '11 (tied for 33rd with a 43-34-77), Pete Kieselbach '10 (tied for 40th with a 35-43-78) and Carlos Lu '10 and R.J. Roewe '09 (both tied for 97th with 85s, going 45-40 and 46-39, respectively).

As a team, Grinnell is 12th with a score of 315. The leader is Wartburg College with a 290. The individual leaders are Wartburg's Chris Reck and Dakota Wesleyan's Brett Abbots, who both shot 69s.

Grinnell also has a B team at the meet, and the top shooter for that squad was Eric Ragan '12, who had a 40-42-82. The B team is in 18th place with a 335.

The Grinnell men's golf team fired its best round in recent history with a 309 at the Wartburg Invitational on Saturday, April 11.

Pete Kieselbach '10 (pictured) led the way for the Pioneers with a 3-over-par 75 on Saturday, giving him a 36-hole score of 153 to tie for 25th place. Peter Marsho '12 had a 76 Saturday and Carlos Lu '10 a 78. Marsho tied for 40th with an overall score of 156 and Lu tied for 64th with a 162.

Alex McDonald '11 and Eric Ragan '12 rounded out the Pioneers with rounds of 82 and 80 on Saturday for final scores of 166 and 167, respectively. McDonald tied for 75th and Ragan was 77th. Grinnell's R.J. Roewe '09 golfed as in individual and had rounds of 82 and 76 to finish at 158.

Grinnell finished 13th in the team standings with a 635, with Saturday's 309 being 17 shots better than the previous day's score. St. Thomas of Minnesota edged Luther College 597-598 for the team title. The individual winner was Andy Petersen of Central, who shot a 142.

"I'm thrilled about today's effort," said Grinnell coach Brian Jaworski. "We showed up and played as a team. I know that sounds impossible because of the individual scoring, but make no mistake about it - college golf is a team sport, at least around here it is. We're deep, we're talented and we are committed to each other, and that showed today. The guys were fired up for each other, pulled each other along hole to hole and ultimately it brought out the best in everyone today.

"This is what this team has to do to be successful," he added. "I'm fired up because you have to start building momentum somewhere, and for such a young team to come together this early in the season and play like we did today leads me to believe that the bond will only get stronger and scores will continue to drop."

Grinnell plays in the Buena Vista Spring Invitational this coming Friday and Saturday.
Wartburg Invitational Final Results

Grinnell College is tied for 15th place after the opening day of the Wartburg Invitational golf meet on Friday, April 10.

The Pioneers shot a score of 326, same as Coe College. The leader is St. Thomas of Minnesota, which had a 296 and is one shot ahead of the hosts.

Grinnell's top shooter was Pete Kieselbach '10, who had a 78 with consecutive rounds of 39. That puts him in a tie for 35th. Peter Marsho '12 shot 41 and 39 for an 80, putting him in a tie for 51st, while Carlos Lu '10 and Alex McDonald '11 each had 84s to tie for 72nd. Lu shot 44-40 and McDonald 41-43. Eric Ragan '12 is 84th with an 87, shooting a 41-46.

The meet finishes up Saturday.

Kieselbach fired a 76, which tied for the best score of the tourney, but wound up second after Central College's Will Overlander won a playoff. The tourney was slated to be a two-day affair, but was halted after Friday's action due to anticipated bad weather on Saturday.

Grinnell finished fifth as a team with a score of 330. Carlos Lu '10 tied for 11th with an 81, while Peter Marsho '12 tied for 29th with an 85. Grinnell also had a second team entered, and that squad finished seventh at 353. Kale Knisley '11 tied for 18th with an 82 and Alex McDonald '11 tied for 22nd with an 83.

Augsburg College won the team crown with a 313, while Central was two shots behind in second.

Carlos Lu '10 (pictured) fired a 78 to lead the way for the Grinnell College men's golf team in a dual meet against the University of Arizona junior varsity squad on Wednesday, March 25, at the Arizona National Golf Club.

Pete Kieselbach '10 and Eric Ragan '12 each added 80s for the Pioneers, while Jeff Kljaich '11 had a 90 and Ethan Kenvarg '12 and Alex McDonald 11 each had 94s. The Wildcats were led by Tom Conran's 70.

Grinnell is slated to compete in the Central Dutch Classic on Friday and Saturday.

With a bulk of the lineup returning from its successful 2008 squad, the Grinnell College men's golf team is looking for big things this season.

Of the six Pioneers who golfed in the Midwest Conference Championships last year, five are back including third-place finisher Carlos Lu '10, who fired a 247 in the three-day event and earned all-conference honors.

Other returnees from that squad are Pete Kieselbach '10 (tied for 12th with a 248), R.J. Roewe '09 (15th with a 250), Jeff Kljaich '11 (tied for 19th with a 254) and Alex McDonald '11 (42nd with a 273). As a team, coach Brian Jaworski's squad finished third in the meet after leading through the first day of competition.

Among the top newcomers who are expected to contribute, based on scores from a meet over spring break, are Eric Ragan '12, Peter Marsho '12 and Ethan Kenvarg '12.

Grinnell travels to Pella on Friday to compete in the two-day Central Dutch Classic.

The Grinnell College men's golf team placed eighth at the Ryerson Fall Classic hosted by Central College over the weekend.

The Pioneers had a two-day score of 695, golfing a 328 the first day and 367 the second. Pete Kieselbach was the top Pioneer, as he tied for 17th with a 161 (78-83). Alex McDonald tied for 35th with a 172 (81-91), Sam Roife tied for 42nd at 179 (84-95), R.J. Roewe was 48th with a 183 (85-98) and Kale Knisley was 53rd with a 196 (89-107). Grinnell's junior varsity also competed, taking 11th place. Salil Kalghatgi tied for 42nd with a 179 (91-98).

Indian Hills Community College won the team title with a 601. Andrew Townsend of Central College was first individually with a 147.

Kieselbach fired a 78, three shots behind third-place Justin Strabala of Kirkwood Community College. Alex McDonald '11 tied for 14th for the Pioneers with an 82, Salil Kalghatgi tied for 38th with a 95 and Nathan Clubb '11 was 42nd with a 106.

The individual champion was Alex Ward of Marshalltown Community College, who shot 72. Marshalltown also won the team title with a 310. Grinnell was eighth at 361.

David Marquardt of Knox was the individual champ with an 8-over-par 224. Marquardt, who led after each of the three rounds, shot 72, 74 and 89.
