The Grinnell College men’s soccer team finished off the regular season in impressive fashion, getting a goal in the 88th minute to shut out Beloit College 1-0 at Springer Field Saturday.
The goal came from the foot of Reed Caron ’13 (pictured), his first of the season. Stephen Craig ’11 had the assist on the play. Craig began the action by bringing the ball downfield before working to the right side of the box.
He continued with the ball, moving toward the center of the box before delivering it to Caron, who sent a point-blank shot past the keeper from 7 yards out for what proved to be the game-winner. It was Craig’s third assist of the season.
Greg Fox ’12 played keeper for Grinnell and earned his eighth shutout of the season. He recorded three saves.
Grinnell outshot the visitors 20-11, with Pun Winichakul ’13, Matti Sahel ’11 and Caron all taking four shots, Juan Carlos Perez ’11 getting three and Mark Rosenberg ’11 and Andrew Mullins ’11 two apiece.
Grinnell finished Midwest Conference play with a 7-2 mark while improving to 9-6-2 overall. Beloit is 3-6 in the league and 8-9 in all games.
The Pioneers will play in their fifth MWC Tournament in a row next weekend at Ripon College. The Pioneers earned the third seed and will face second-seeded Carroll University in Friday’s semifinals. Ripon, the top seed, will take on fourth-seeded Lawrence University the same day. The winners meet Saturday for the title and trip to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
