The Grinnell College men’s soccer team finished off its 2011 campaign in stunning fashion Sunday afternoon, posting an 8-1 victory over Knox College at Springer Field on Senior Day.
The Pioneers’ goal total is the most in a game since a 1987 victory over Cornell College, and the shot total of 35 is third-best in school history.
Five Pioneers scored their first goals of the season in the contest, and Ben Schemper ’12 – who typically is a goal keeper – got the first goal of his career in his final game wearing a Pioneer uniform. Bozo Susac ’12 (pictured) also had a goal in his finale at Grinnell.
Benjamin Charney ’15 and Rockne Decoster ’15 each had two goals for the Pioneers, who finished at 3-5-1 in the Midwest Conference and 5-10-2 overall. Knox dropped to 0-9 in the league and 1-16 in all games.
In all, 28 Pioneers saw action in the game and 15 took at least one shot.
Susac opened the scoring in the 10th minute with his team-high fifth goal of the game, coming on an assist from Evan Wright ’12. On the play, Wright delivered a through ball to Susac, who faked a shot to get past the first defender and then delivered the goal from 10 yards out.
Charney made it 2-0 in the 20th minute with his first goal of the season on Charlie Kessner’s ’12 assist. Kessner began things by throwing the ball into the corner of the box, and Charney used some nifty dribbling to get free and strike the ball for a goal.
Knox tied the game in the 22nd minute before Grinnell scored twice more in the half, once on Charney’s second goal in the 31st minute and again in the 41st minute on Decoster’s first goal of the season.
On Charney’s goal, Wright delivered to Decoster who dribbled forward on the break and made the extra touch pass to Charney, who put it in.
On Decoster’s goal, Elliot Meyer ’15 had a lead ball to Decoster, who curved it in past the keeper.
Grinnell kept going in the second half, as Reed Caron ’13 scored his first goal of the season in the 53rd minute on an assist by Susac. On the play, Susac delivered the corner to the far post where Caron headed it in for the score.
Decoster scored in the 73rd minute on Charney’s assist. On a breakaway, Charney crossed the ball into the box to Decoster, who calmly finished the one-on-one against the keeper to make it 6-1.
Meyer scored his first goal of the season in the 87th minute. The play began with a breakaway and Schemper, who had the assist, sent an impressive cross to Meyer, who finished it off.
Just a bit over a minute later, Schemper scored on Benjamin Warner’s ’15 assist. Warner delivered a touch-pass to Schemper, who used a nifty left-foot finish for the goal.
Decoster finished with six shots for Grinnell, Caron had five and Warner and Daryl Brost ’12 tallied three apiece.
Greg Fox ’12 played 49 minutes at keeper and had six saves. Schemper worked the next 24 minutes and Isaiah Tyree ’15 finished off the game.
