The Grinnell College men’s soccer team snapped a four-game winless streak in thrilling fashion Saturday afternoon at Springer Field, defeating Ripon College 3-2 in overtime.
Charlie Kessner ’12 (pictured) scored the game-winner in the 95th minute on assists from Reed Caron ’13 and Marshall Botto ’15.
Caron began the play by getting the ball to Botto, who worked it up along the right end line and sent it to Kessner. Kessner took the pass in front of the goal and beat the keeper for the victory. It was Kessner’s first goal of the year.
Grinnell led 2-1 at halftime. After Ripon opened the scoring in the 17th minute, Bozo Susac ’12 tied it for Grinnell in the 22nd minute on Caron’s first assist of the game. On the play, Caron delivered a shot from the right side from about 20 yards out that the Ripon keeper pushed away. However, Susac was right there to recover and put it in the net from a few yards out for his team-high fourth goal of the year.
In the 31st minute, Joseph Brown ’15 scored to put the Pioneers ahead 2-1. The play began when Evan Wright ’12 lined up for a free kick from the right side, which was instead taken by Benjamin Warner ’15. Brown crossed behind the wall, got to the ball and shot it in for his third goal of the year.
The score remained 2-1 at halftime before Ripon tied things in the 79th minute. It remained tied through regulation, forcing overtime.
The shots battle was nearly even, with Ripon winning 15-14. Kessner had three shots for Grinnell, while Susac, Rockne Decoster ’15, Brown and Wright took two each.
