Brus

Michael Brus ‘14 destroyed the Grinnell College record in the men’s 500-yard freestyle while sending the Pioneers to the early lead at the 2012 Midwest Conference Swimming and Diving Championships Friday at Appleton, Wis.

Brus won the race in 4:31.31, which is not only a new conference meet record but also shattered the previous Grinnell best of 4:42.31 set by Dave Anderson in 1986. That clocking is also an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

Brus also swam on the first-place 400 medley relay team with Beck Ringdahl-Mayland ‘13, Chris Kaiser-Nyman ‘13 and Marco Fulgoni ‘12. Their time was 3:28.57.

Fulgoni added a win in the 50 freestyle (21.91) and was part of the 200 freestyle relay team with Gus Fulgoni ‘15, Jerry Brown ‘14 and Ethan Drutchas ‘13 (1:26.46).

Runners-up for Grinnell were Joe Lytle ‘14 in the 500 freestyle (4:48.37), Thomas Lankiewicz ‘12 in the 200 individual medley (1:58.38) and Gus Fulgoni in the 50 freestyle (22.29).

Colin Yarnell ‘12 was third in three-meter diving (433.60), while placing fourth were Michael Schoelz ‘12 in the 200 individual medley (2:00.69) and Michael Riegsecker ‘15 in three-meter diving (332.95).

Ringdahl-Mayland and Kaiser-Nyman were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 200 individual medley with times of 2:01.75 and 2:02.28.

Grinnell has 300.5 points, well ahead of runner-up Lake Forest College’s total of 213.5.

The meet continues Saturday and concludes Sunday.
