Nick Smith’s ’10 (pictured) win in three-meter diving paved the way for a successful opening day for the Grinnell College men’s swimming and diving team at its own invitational Friday at Obermiller Pool.
Smith won with a score of 367.90 as Grinnell compiled a team score of 303, which puts the Pioneers in second in the eight-team meet and just 12 points behind leader Luther College.
The Pioneers recorded four runner-up finishes on the day, three in relays. Ethan Drutchas ’13, Michael Schoelz ’12, Tommy Olson ’10 and Marco Fulgoni ’12 all swam in the second-place 200 freestyle relay (1 minute, 30.14 seconds), Drutchas, Paul Gagne ’10, Glenn Clark ’10 and Thomas Lankiewicz ’12 were on the runner-up 800 freestyle relay (7:41.62) and Schoelz, Olson, Fulgoni and Cyrus Mistry ’11 were on the second-place 400 medley relay (3:48.03).
Mistry was also second in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.45), and Beck Ringdahl-Mayland ’13 was third (2:19.08). Ringdahl-Mayland was also third in the 200 individual medley (2:07.55), while other third-place finishers were Olson in the 100 backstroke (58.53) and Drutchas in the 100 freestyle (49.88).
For Grinnell’s women, Kelly Bruce ’12 claimed the one-meter diving competition with a score of 384.05. As a team, Grinnell has 230 points and is only behind Luther, which had 300 in the 10-team event.
The Pioneers had numerous runners-up on the women’s side, including two relays. Emily Summers ’10, Lauren O’Hair ’12, Morgan Horton ’11 and Chloe Moryl ’10 were runners-up in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1 minute, 46.48 seconds, and Morgan Bober ’12, Meghan McDoniel ’10, Amy Hadow ’10 and Jacqueline Anderson ’11 were second in the 400 medley relay in 4:16.
Other runners-up were Bober in the 200 individual medley (2:18.04) and Emily Bajet ’12 in the 200 butterfly (2:28.41).
Finishing third was the 800 freestyle relay team of Bober, Martha Reilly ’12, McDoniel and Anderson. Their time was 8:23.75.
The meet concludes on Saturday.
