The Grinnell College swimming and diving teams will open the 2009-10 campaign at home Friday, hosting the University of Nebraska Swim Club at 5 p.m. at Obermiller Pool.
Coming off its eighth straight Midwest Conference Championship last season, the Grinnell College men's swimming and diving team hopes to make it nine in a row in 2010. This would set a new record for the longest consecutive streak (previously held by Grinnell during two eras from 1979-1986 and 2002-2009). With four returning MWC champions from 2009, the Pioneers will look to build on these. Returning to repeat their winning ways will be Thomas Lankiewicz '12 (200 and 400 IM in 2009) and Cyrus Mistry '11 (100 breast in 2009 and 200 breast in 2008 and 2009). Joining them will be Nick Smith '10, who comes off conference titles in 2009 on both the one- and three-meter boards. Rounding out the title holders is Marco Fulgoni '12, who will look to defend his individual championship in the 50 free.
Sprint Freestyle:
After finishing in three of the top six places at the MWC meet last season, the sprints should still remain a strength for the Pioneers. Marco Fulgoni returns to defend his title along with Thomas Olson '10 (third) and Michael Schoelz '12 (fourth), who are also eying the crown. Jon Willuhn '10 should continue to put pressure on the leaders. First-years to join them will be Ethan Drutchas '13 and Pun Winichakul '13, who will also help the Pioneers to defend their sprint relay titles.
Distance Freestyle:
Thomas Lankiewicz returns as the runner-up in the 1650 with co-captain Paul Gagne' 10 (third in the 500 and fifth in the 1650 in 2009, 1650 title in '07), Ross Noecker '11 (fifth in the 500 in 2009) and Patrick Thomas '10 (ninth in the 500) to show depth in the distance events. Co-captain Anders Ahlberg '10 will split time between the breaststroke and distance freestyle events, hoping to improve on his ninth-place finish in the 1650. Joining these returners will be first-years Petar Miljkovic '13 in the 500 and Fabian Flexas '13 in the middle distance events. Garnering some speed from the sprinters, the Pioneers could have their best distance freestyle relay in almost a decade.
Backstroke:
Once again, the Pioneers will not be able to rely on depth in the backstroke events. In the longer distance, Patrick Thomas and Glenn Clark '10 will return to improve on their fourth- and fifth-place finishes, Jon Willuhn looks to move up from his ninth-place performance, while Thomas Olson returns as the lone point-scorer in the 100 (fourth in the 2009). Returners Joe Sinnwell '12 and Sebastian De Pasquale '12 could also add needed help in this area. With some creativity, the Pioneers could get some points from Peter Miljkovic.
Breaststroke:
Dominance is becoming the best descriptor for what the Pioneers could turn in for these events. Defending conference champion Cyrus Mistry will be joined by a host of talented breaststroke swimmers. In the 100, Michael Schoelz and Anders Ahlberg finished third and fifth at last year's championship, while Ian Warlick '10 had a top five time swimming out of the exhibition heats. In the 200, backing up Misty's MWC meet and pool recording-setting performance, are Ahlberg (seventh in 2009) and Jon Willuhn (10th in 2009). Rounding out the other potential contributors in this very deep event for the Pioneers are Bill Mogavero '12, Chris Dorman '12, Ben Haines '12, Alec Knight, '13, Alex Hsieh '13, David Achio Mendez '13, Beck Ringdahl-Mayland '13, and Pun Winichakul. The latter two coming into Grinnell have high school performances that would contend for last year's top two conference spots.
Butterfly:
Even with the graduation of conference champion Nate Wittnam '09, the butterfly could end up as another strong event for the Pioneers. Glenn Clark returns to improve upon his runner-up finish in the 200 along with Patrick Thomas, who finished fourth. In the 100, Clark finished fourth but will be eying his way up the ladder. Joining the returners will be Rick Bigler '13, Sebastian De Pasquale, Manu Spooner '13, Alex Hsieh, and Alec Knight.
Individual Medley:
As Thomas Lankiewicz returns to defend his titles in the 200 and 400, and Cyrus Mistry improves upon his fourth-place finish in 200, the Pioneers will look to first-years Beck Ringdahl-Mayland, Pun Winichakul, Alex Hsieh and Alec Knight to provide formidable back-up for the Pioneers.
Diving:
Once again, one of the Smith brothers returns to defend his titles on both boards as Nick Smith will lead the diving trio of Mark Sullivan '10 (second on the three-meter and fourth on the one-meter in 2009), and Charlie Kessner '12 (fourth on the three-meter and fifth on the one-meter in 2009). Smith was a provisional national qualifier last year and will hope to finish his campaign with a trip to the Division III Nationals.
The Grinnell College swimming and diving teams recently collected academic accolades from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.
The Pioneer women's squad was named a Division III Scholar All-American Team.
Additionally, a trio of Grinnell men and women earned Individual Scholar All-American Honorable Mention honors in Division III. They included Kelly Bruce '12 and Morgan Bober '12 from the women's team and Cyrus Mistry '11 from the men's squad.
