Men Finish Second Behind Luther at GC Invite

The Grinnell College men's swimming and diving team returned to action this past weekend when they competed in the Grinnell College Invitational. The Pioneers recorded 506 total team points, placing them second. Luther won the Invite with 788 points.

The Pioneers had a successful two days of competition in the relay events as the picked up five runner-up finishes. On Friday, the 200 freestyle relay "A" team of Kevin Wood '07, Tommy Olson '10, Dan Neely '09, and Sean Warlick '08 got things going, taking second in a time of 1:30.56, while the 800 freestyle relay "A" team of Warlick, Nate Kimball '07, Paul Gagne '10, and Nate Wittnam '09 also captured a runner-up finish with a time of 7:33.50. Grinnell then finished the day with another strong relay performance with the 400 medley relay "A" team, consisting of Olson, Mike Weslander '09, Kimball, and Neely, capturing second by crossing the finish line in 3:46.24.

In Saturday's relay events, the 200 medley relay "A" team of Olson, Weslander, Wood, and Warlick placed second in 1:42.72, while the 400 freestyle relay "A" team of Wood, Neely, Kimball, and Warlick brought home second place in 3:21.08.

Kimball took second in the 200 IM (2:03.45) and the 400 IM (4:27.25), to go along with a third-place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:03.91). Weslander placed second in the 200 breaststroke (2:16.48) as Matt Remissong '08 took third. He also took fifth in the 400 IM (4:38.72) and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.19).

Wittnam captured a runner-up finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:55.35 before taking the crown in the 200 butterfly (2:00.93). He then took fifth in the 100 butterfly (55.81), while also placing third in the 200 backstroke (2:06.92).

Wood capped off his performance with a runner-up finish in both the 100 butterfly (53.91) and the 50 freestyle (22.60). Remissong also captured a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.00.

In the diving competition, Garnet Smith '08 took second in the 3-meter portion (387.70) as Nick Smith '10 took third (305.60). In the 1-meter competition, Garnet Smith took second (323.45), Nick Smith was fourth (299.55), and Mark Sullivan '10 finished sixth (184.15).

Grinnell will be back in action this Friday evening when they travel to Luther for a dual meet beginning at 6:00 p.m.
