The Grinnell College men’s tennis team started the season on a strong note Saturday, blanking St. Ambrose University 9-0 at the Charles Benson Bear ’39 Recreation and Athletic Center Field House.

The Pioneers began the day with doubles wins by the tandems of Elliott Czarnecki ’15-Michael Cole ’12 (8-4), Conor Cunningham ’15-Aaron Lapkin ’15 (8-1) and Ishan Bhadkamkar ’13-Benjamin Charney ’15 (8-4).

The combination of strong returnees and a talented group of newcomers has the Grinnell College men’s tennis team expecting another successful campaign in 2012.

The Pioneers are coming off a solid season in which they posted a 23-8 dual meet record and won their eighth consecutive Midwest Conference title.

Four Grinnell College entries advanced to the round of 32 before falling at the USTA/ITA Regional Tennis Championships this weekend at St. Peter, Minn.

In singles play, Michael Cole ’12 (pictured and Martin Dluhos ’12 advanced to that round with a pair of victories each.

Cole and Dluhos also achieved that feat in doubles, posting a first-round win and then losing to the top seed from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Also...

Grinnell College’s Juan Carlos Perez ’11 ((left) and Dmitriy Glumov ’11 (right) have been named Academic Scholar-Athletes by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

To earn the honor, a player must have a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year, be a varsity letter winner and be enrolled at his present school for at least two semesters.

Grinnell College’s Juan Carlos Perez ’11 (pictured) wrapped up a stellar collegiate tennis career Friday, losing 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 to eighth-seeded Stephen Sullivan of Bowdoin in the opening singles round of the NCAA Division III National Championships at Claremont, Calif.

Perez, who owns every Grinnell singles and doubles record, finishes the season with a 35-3 mark. One of just a handful of players ever to win 200-plus combined singles...

Grinnell College got off to an impressive start against the nation’s ninth-ranked men’s tennis team, but the University of Chicago rallied for a 5-2 victory in the second round of NCAA Division III Tournament play Saturday at Saint Peter, Minn.

With its back to the wall, the Grinnell College men’s tennis team responded with authority in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament Friday afternoon at Saint Peter, Minn.

The Pioneers fell behind 2-1 in doubles play against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, but were not fazed. Instead, the Pioneers reeled off wins in four of five singles matches to clinch the 5-3 victory.

For the third year in a row, Grinnell College’s Juan Carlos Perez ’11 has been selected to compete in the NCAA Division III National Tennis Tournament in singles play.

The Grinnell College men’s tennis team is heading to Saint Peter, Minn., this week for the NCAA Division III Regional Team Tournament.

The Pioneers, who are 22-7 and advanced to the NCAA Tourney by winning the Midwest Conference title last week, will take on Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Friday at noon. Wisconsin-Eau Claire enters the tourney with a 24-5 record.
