Grinnell College’s Alex Reich ’11 (pictured) claimed the men’s 10,000-meter run at the 2011 Midwest Conference Men’s Track and Field Championships Friday at Monmouth, Ill.
Reich ran the race in 32:18.45 to beat his nearest competitor by more than 23 seconds.
Two other Pioneers also finished in the top 10, as Erik Figge ’13 was third in 32:53.12 and Dan Krauss ’12 placed seventh in 33:39.19.
Ben Brewer ’11 was the runner-up in the javelin with a toss of 173-5, missing first place by less than a foot. That performance ranks fourth in Grinnell history.
Marquis Bradley ’11 was fifth in the event at 157-11.
Placing fourth were Noah DeLong ’11 in the 1500 (4:05.54) and Gavin Warnock ’14 in the long jump (22-1/4). Warnock’s performance is tied for fifth-best in school history, while Sam Goldstein ’11 jumped 21-10 to place sixth and ranks eighth all-time at Grinnell.
Grinnell had two other top 10 finishers in the 1500 besides DeLong, as Sam Krauth ’14 was seventh in 4:06.52 and Chris Wilson ’11 was ninth in 4:09.04.
Also placing ninth was Jake Lindstrom ’14 in the pole vault (13-4 ¼).
The Pioneers had several runners earn spots in their respective finals after faring well in preliminary action, including Andy Hirakawa ’12 in the 110 hurdles, Davis Hermann ’11 in the 400, Scott Phillips ’11 in the 100 and Eric Ragan ’12 in the 400 hurdles. Ragan’s preliminary time of 55.76 is ninth-best in school history.
Grinnell is second in the team standings with 45 points. Monmouth College leads the event with 50.
The meet concludes Saturday.
