Head Coach Will Freeman
Freeman has led the Pioneers to 27 Midwest Conference titles in cross country and track and field in his years at Grinnell. He has coached beginners to national champions while at Grinnell. Freeman attended the University of Florida where he competed as an internationally-ranked pole vaulter. He won five SEC titles in the vault, received All-America recognition and was finalist at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
He is a former National Chairman for Coaching Education for the USA Track & Field and holds Level III certification as a coach and as a Level II instructor. A much sought-after clinician speaking at clinics both around the U.S. and internationally, he has also written three books, many articles and 19 training videos for coaches of all levels. He has trained coaches and athletes throughout the US, in Canada, the Bahamas, and Africa. Besides his duties as cross country and track coach, Freeman is an Associate Professor at Grinnell College and teaches popular courses in the Foundations of Sports Psychology and Wellness.
He has been at Grinnell since 1980. He was inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. Freeman’s wife Evelyn is the women’s cross country and track coach at Grinnell.
