Ben Tyler ’14 (pictured) claimed runner-up honors in the mile run to lead the Grinnell College men’s track and field team at the Hilltop Open over the weekend at Cornell College.

Tyler ran the race in 4:36.30, less than a second behind the winner. Grinnell had two other high finishers in the race, as Sam Krauth ’14 placed third in 4:37.00 and Evan Griffith ’15 was seventh in 4:41.00.

Kyle Moorehead ’15 (pictured) led Grinnell College men with a third-place finish in the 1000-meter during the Dutch Athletics Classic indoor track and field meet Friday in Pella.

He finished in a time of 2:41.28, just .18 behind the champion.

Eric Ragan ’12 and David Garwood ’13 added high finishes in the 300, placing fourth and fifth in 40.08 and 40.99, respectively.

Longtime Grinnell coach Will Freeman has been elected chairman of the NCAA Division III Track and Field/Cross Country Committee by a vote of NCAA committee members.

A member of the NCAA committee for the past three years, Freeman has been the liaison for cross country and indoor track and also the D-III representative to the NCAA rules committee.

The Grinnell College men’s and women’s track and field squads were named 2011 NCAA Division III All-Academic Teams by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Sixty-four men’s programs and 111 women’s teams earned the honor, which is given to squads with a cumulative grade point average of 3.1 or higher.

Grinnell College’s Sam Goldstein ’11 earned a trio of top 10 finishes at the Augustana College Twilight Invite track and field meet Friday in Rock Island, Ill.

He was eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 40-4, ninth in the long jump at 20-2 ½ and 10th in the 100-meter dash in 11.53.

Grinnell College’s Alex Reich ’11 capped a stellar career Thursday with a personal-best time in the men’s 10,000-meter run at the North Central College Gregory Track and Field Invitational.

Reich was second in the event with a clocking of 31:14.82, just missing the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 31:13.

Reich’s time also boosted him up to third on Grinnell’s all-time leader board.

Grinnell College’s Alex Reich ’11 (pictured) claimed the men’s 10,000-meter run at the 2011 Midwest Conference Men’s Track and Field Championships Friday at Monmouth, Ill.

Reich ran the race in 32:18.45 to beat his nearest competitor by more than 23 seconds.

Two other Pioneers also finished in the top 10, as Erik Figge ’13 was third in 32:53.12 and Dan Krauss ’12 placed seventh in 33:39.19.

A trio of third-place finishes led the way for the Grinnell College men’s track and field team Saturday at the Monmouth College Fighting Scot Invitational.
