Constitution of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee
  • Article I

  • Purpose
  • A. To provide a forum where student-athletes may appropriately discuss needs, views, and experiences in the sporting experience at Grinnell College
  • B. To facilitate and maintain effective communication between the student-athlete, Administration and Faculty, and the various sports teams.
  • C. Foster and encourage unity between the sports teams while following the tenants of the DIII Philosophy.
  • D. Promote and support Grinnell College Athletics.
  • E. To actively promote and facilitate student-athlete participation in and community projects and provide a medium for social responsibility.
  • Article II

  • Structure
  • A. Each Varsity team has two representatives to the committee.
  • B. Committee members will serve semester terms.
  • C. Sub-committee chairs will serve year long terms.
  • D. Officers will serve year long terms.
  • E. The committee will meet according to need, approximately twice per month. Each member is required to attend or find a suitable substitute.
  • F. All members and substitutes may participate in the voting process. Each member in entitled to one and only one vote.
  • G. The Athletic Director or his/her representative will serve as a facilitator and advisor to the committee. Her/his role will be a liaison between the administration and the members of SAAC.
  • H. Each member shall be available to sit on at least one sub-committee.
  • Article III

  • Membership
  • A. Membership is limited to Grinnell College student-athletes eligible to participate in their varsity sport.
  • B. Members will be elected or appointed by the teams of coaches of the specific sport.
  • C. Members must be eligible to participate in the sporting event in accordance with NCAA, Midwest Conference, and Grinnell College rules including academic eligibility.
  • D. Membership may not be based on, or will members be treated differently due to sex, race, color, creed, sexual or associational preference, disability, age, or any further classification.
  • Article IV

  • Officers
  • A. Elections will be held each spring semester for President, Vice President, and Secretary
  • 1. The President of the previous year's committee will call for nominations for each office at the end of the spring semester
  • 2. Nominee's names will be recorded and each member will vote for one person for each office. Each member may cast one and only one vote for each office.
  • 3. Voting will be by show of hands and will be counted by the Athletic Director or another advisor.
  • Duties
  • A. Duties of the Executive Board
  • 1. President
  • a. Presides over meeting of the committee.
  • b. Serves as a liaison to Athletic Department and Administration.
  • c. Functions as spokesperson to college and general community.
  • d. Calls or cancels meetings.
  • 2. Vice President
  • a. Serves as President when President is absent.
  • b. Assists in the coordination of sub-committees
  • c. Serves as Secretary when Secretary is absent.
  • 3. Secretary
  • a. Takes official written record of the proceedings of each and every meeting
  • b. Disseminates all appropriate material to members, including copies of minutes and other pertinent information.
  • 4. The Executive Board may be called to meet with the Athletic Director in order to set agenda and perform other duties.
  • B. Duties of Representatives
  • 1. Attend all meeting of SAAC.
  • 2. In case of absence, must find a suitable replacement.
  • 3. Report and discuss pertinent issues with the committee.
  • 4. Serve as a liaison between individual teams and the committee.
  • 5. Participates in activities sponsored by SAAC.
  • C. Sub-Committees
  • 1. If SAAC forms a sub-committee, it is the responsibility of the members of the sub-committee to perform its responsibility in a timely manner.
  • 2. The sub-committee may need to meet as a time set by members in order to fulfill the needs of the sub-committee.
  • 3. It is the responsibility of the sub-committee to report back to SAAC about the sub-committee actions.
  • Article V

  • Activities and Meetings
  • A. SAAC will meet regularly to address problems, conduct business, and provide an open environment where student-athletes may voice their opinions and concerns.
  • B. SAAC will meet according to necessity. Meeting will be held on Tuesday at 12:00 P.M., unless another time is found to be more convenient. The new time must be voted upon and posted.
  • C. SAAC will work to develop and maintain open communication with the Administration and between athletes, coaches, and teams.
  • D. SAAC will work to promote Grinnell Athletics through social and educational events within the College and the greater community.
