The Grinnell College softball team dropped a home doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, falling by scores of 15-2 and 8-0 to Lake Forest College in Midwest Conference action.
Brianna Gallo ’11 (pictured), one of four Pioneers celebrating Senior Day, had three hits in the twin bill.
In the first game, Lake Forest struck first with five runs in the top of the first inning. Grinnell got one of its runs in the bottom of the first when Kelsey Montgomery ’11 singled to right field with two out, moved to second on a single to left by Amanda Stromquist ’12 and scored when Jayme Wiebold ’12 singled through the left side.
But the Foresters bounced back with two runs in the second inning, three in the third, one in the fourth and four in the fifth for a 15-1 lead.
Grinnell managed one run in the bottom of the fifth. Gallo singled with one out, advanced to second on a throw to the plate after the hit, stole third and scored on Montgomery’s single to right.
In the second game, Grinnell got runners to second and third base with nobody out in the bottom of the first inning but couldn’t score.
Lake Forest got a run in the second inning, two more in the third, two in the fourth and three in the sixth. Gallo had two of the Pioneers’ four hits. She also had two stolen bases in the game, making her a perfect 17-of-17 for the season in that department.
Lake Forest is now 7-3 in the league and 12-16 overall, while Grinnell fell to 0-9 in conference play and 0-25 overall.
The Pioneers close out the home portion of their schedule Thursday when Monmouth College visits for a doubleheader. Action begins at 3 p.m.
