WAUKEGAN, Ill. – Grinnell’s softball team went 0-3 on the opening day of the Midwest Conference Classic Saturday at Waukegan SportsPark.
Lawrence University recorded a no-hitter against the Pioneers in a 12-0, five-inning victory. The winners scored three runs in the first inning, another in the second and eight in the third.
Amanda Stromquist ’12 suffered the pitching loss for Grinnell.
Ripon College followed with a 10-0 win over the Pioneers. It was just a 3-0 game entering the seventh inning before the Red Hawks, who had scored all three of their runs in the second inning, exploded for seven in the seventh.
Grinnell managed two hits, singles by Christina Colver ’12 and Aniela Wendt ‘14.
The Pioneers finished the day with an 8-0, six-inning loss to St. Norbert College. It was scoreless through three innings before the winners tallied a run in the fourth inning, four in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Grinnell had four hits, singles by Summer Wilke ’15, Jennifer Fulton ’15, Jessica Menary ’13 and Wendt. Fulton suffered the pitching loss.
Grinnell, 2-19 overall and 0-5 in MWC play, finishes the event Sunday with games against Beloit College and Carroll University.
