The Grinnell College softball team opened the season with a pair of losses Sunday afternoon, falling 7-0 and 9-1 at Westminster College.

Grinnell was hampered by six errors in the first game as Westminster scored four runs in the first inning and one each in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames. Summer Wilke ’15 had the Pioneers’ lone hit, a single to right-center field in the fourth inning.

Jennifer Fulton ’15 suffered the pitching loss for Grinnell.

In the second game, Westminster again scored four runs in the first inning and added another in the third for a 5-0 lead.

Grinnell got its run in the fourth frame. Aniela Wendt ’14 led off with a double to right-center, moved to third on a sacrifice by Wilke and scored on an RBI by Jayme Wiebold ’12.

Westminster countered with a run in the bottom of the fourth and scored three more in the sixth.

Amanda Stromquist ’12 was tagged with the loss.

The Pioneers don’t play again until March 19 with contests at Stephens College.
