The Grinnell College softball team gave the nation’s third-ranked team a good run for a portion of Wednesday’s opener in a twin bill, but host Coe College broke away for a 7-0 victory in Cedar Rapids.

The Kohawks finished the day with a 21-2 victory to move to 20-2 on the season. Grinnell fell to 1-9.

GRINNELL - The Grinnell College softball team celebrated its first home game of the 2012 season Saturday in historic, and thrilling, fashion.

The Pioneers, who had lost 39 consecutive contests dating back to May 3, 2010, snapped that skid with an 8-5 victory over Wartburg College of the Iowa Conference at the Softball Complex. Grinnell pounded out 14 hits in the winning effort.

The Grinnell College softball team battled well against Greenville College, but in the end the hosts posted wins of 5-1 and 6-4 Wednesday.

Grinnell managed four hits in the opener, including a double by Amanda Stromquist ’12. Greenville scored solo runs in the first and third innings, but Grinnell cut the gap in half in the fifth. The Grinnell College softball team lost a twin bill against Stephens College Monday at Columbia, Mo., falling 13-5 in the opener and 9-1 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Jayme Wiebold ’12 led Grinnell at the plate by going 2-for-3 while Jessica Menary ’13 had a triple.

The hosts broke out to a 5-0 lead with three runs in the first inning and one each in the second and third.

The Grinnell College softball team opened the season with a pair of losses Sunday afternoon, falling 7-0 and 9-1 at Westminster College.

Grinnell was hampered by six errors in the first game as Westminster scored four runs in the first inning and one each in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames. Summer Wilke ’15 had the Pioneers’ lone hit, a single to right-center field in the fourth inning.
