Grinnell College volleyball player Claire Reeder '11 was named to the 2007 All-Midwest Conference second team on Monday.
Reeder, a 6-foot middle hitter from La Grange Park, Ill., provided the Pioneers with a huge spark this season. She not only made the all-tournament team at every tournament in which Grinnell competed, but also etched her name among the Pioneers' all-time leaders in numerous categories. She finished third-best in kills per game average for a season (4.00), sixth in kills in a season (392) and 11th for blocks in a season (104). She had 32 kills in a match with Culver-Stockton, which is the third-highest total in Grinnell history.
Reeder also led the Pioneers in aces with 0.29 per game and was third in digs with 3.15 a contest. Her efforts helped the young Pioneers finish the season with a two-match winning streak, a good sign of things to come.
Joanna Mamayek of St. Norbert College was named the 2007 MWC Player of the Year.

The Grinnell College volleyball team closed its 2007 campaign in stellar fashion Sunday afternoon with a four-game win at Darby Gym. Game scores in favor of the Pioneers, who ended the season with a two-game winning streak, were 30-27, 23-30, 30-26 and 30-21.
With the weekend wins, Grinnell finished seventh in the Midwest Conference at 3-6 while going 5-24 overall. Illinois College finished at 2-7 and 6-21.
The Pioneers started out on fire by scoring five of the first six points in the initial game. Erin Labasan '11 had an ace during that span and Claire Reeder '11 a kill. After Illinois College scored a point, there was a 20-minute delay in action when Janice Johnson of the visiting team went down with an ankle injury. Paramedics were summoned to take her to the hospital. She later returned to the game on crutches.
The game remained tight until Grinnell used a five-point run to turn a tied score into a 16-11 lead. The Pioneers continued to hold the visitors at bay, taking another five-point lead a bit later when a combo block by Elizabeth Davis '11 and Reeder made it 18-13. But then it was Illinois College's turn, as the Lady Blues went on a five-point run to tie things up. There was one more tie before the visitors took their first lead at 20-19. Things remained tight before a three-point run by Grinnell put the hosts at game point with a 29-26 lead. After the visitors scored, the Pioneers closed out the victory.
Grinnell dug itself in a 6-3 hole in the second game, only to respond with a five-point run to grab an 8-6 edge. Labasan and Montgomery had kills to spark the run. Illinois came back, though, and took a four-point lead midway through the contest at 16-12 with the aid of a four-point spurt. The Pioneers reeled off two straight points to come within 16-14, but that was as close as it would get as the visitors won by seven.
The Pioneers led the third game most of the early going, breaking out to a 12-9 lead before a three-point run that included an ace by Rachel Smith made it 15-9. The Pioneers still held a seemingly-comfortable 18-13 lead when Illinois College went on a run to forge an 18-all tie. There were four more ties in the next few minutes, the last at 22-all, when Grinnell went on a 4-1 run for a 26-23 edge. Reeder had a pair of tips during that time. The Pioneers never let Illinois College get closer than two after that and finished off the four-point win with a kill by Caitlin Helterline '10.
Illinois College shot out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth game. The lead fluctuated between two and five points for quite some time after that before a passing error by the visitors brought Grinnell within 15-14. The Pioneers finally drew even at 18 on a tip by Montgomery and took their first lead of the game on a hitting error by the visitors.
After the contest was tied at 19, Grinnell went on a key four-point run that included a block by Helterline for a 23-19 lead. The Pioneers continued to cruise and eventually gained a 26-20 lead to force a timeout by Illinois College. When play resumed, Reeder came up with a thundering kill to push the hosts up by seven and Labasan served an ace to make it 28-20. The Lady Blues answered with a point, only to have Reeder have another big kill to make it match point. A four-hit violation on Illinois College ended the game and gave Grinnell the match.
Reeder had 26 kills, 16 digs, five blocks and hit .320 on the day. Montgomery had 12 kills and hit .440, while Labasan dished out 46 assists while coming up with 13 digs and two aces. The teams battled on even terms early in the third game, as there were four ties initially before Grinnell pulled out to an 8-5 lead following a Fighting Scot hitting error. The Pioneers built their lead as big as six at 14-8, but Monmouth got right back in it with a five-point run to come within 14-13. However, a Reeder kill kept the visitors from tying it. The Pioneers continued to hold off Monmouth, twice going up by five on kills by Reeder that made it 21-16 and 22-17.
The visitors closed within two at 22-20, but Grinnell answered with a four-point run that was capped by a kill from Elizabeth Davis '11 to make it 26-20. A hitting error by the visitors put Grinnell a point away from the win and Reeder's kill sealed it at 33-31.
Like the third game, the fourth was also close early and remained so for a while after. There were four more ties shortly after that before Grinnell went on a critical three-point run that included a block by Davis and Montgomery, a hitting error by the visitors and a tip by Montgomery for a 27-24 lead, forcing Monmouth to use a timeout.
The Fighting Scots then went on a four-point run to take the lead before Grinnell tied it at 28-all. A hitting error by Monmouth put Grinnell at game point before Monmouth scored three straight points to secure the win and force a fifth game.
The fifth game was a classic battle early on, as neither team led by more than one and there were ties at the first eight points. The Grinnell College volleyball team is listed ninth in the 2007 Midwest Conference preseason coaches' poll.
Carroll and St. Norbert shared the top spot in the balloting, even though Carroll had one more first-place vote (4 to 3).
The Pioneers are looking to improve on last season's mark of 3-25 and 0-9in the league.
That likely will be the case as Coach Tom Sonnichsen's 13-player team of a year ago consisted of nine first-years and sophomores. Gone to graduation are three players who started all four seasons during their careers. However, this year's squad of 15 players adds six new faces and according to Sonnichsen some of the first-years will start immediately.
Leading the returnees are sophomore outside hitter Caitlin Helterline (120 kills, 126 digs), junior setter Courtney Smith (368 assists, 116 digs) sophomore libero Caroline
Bailey (529 digs) and outside hitter Sandra King (88 kills, 131 digs). King is the squad's lone senior in 2007.
Grinnell will be tested early this season on August 31 and September 1 when they host the annual Grinnell College Invitational Tournament. Among their opponents in the tournament are the perennial powerhouses Central and Augustana Colleges. Later in the year they play national powers Elmhurst College and Washington University in another tournament.
"In tournaments you really don't get to pick and choose who you will be playing," says
Sonnichsen, "but, our goal is to prepare to play in the tough Midwest Conference. What better way than to play outstanding teams and become accustomed to pressure and great competition. We will be young again this season with the majority of players being sophomores and first-years, but I know that this is a talented group of players with great attitudes, and I know they will rise to the challenge."
