History repeated itself for the Grinnell College women’s basketball team Tuesday as the Pioneers rolled past Knox College 87-67 at Darby Gymnasium.

For the second game in a row, Rebecca DeGroot ’14 led the team in scoring, while Megan Huey ’12 and Michelle Briggs ’13 again posted double-doubles as the Pioneers improved to 9-4 in the Midwest Conference and 10-7 overall.

Huey, named to the D3hoops.com National Team of the Week earlier Tuesday, extended her double-double string to five consecutive games and Briggs accomplished the feat for the fourth contest in a row.

DeGroot finished with a game-high 21 points, hitting 9-of-14 field goals in the process. Huey had 18 points and 13 rebounds, as well as four assists and four blocks, while Briggs had 18 points, 10 boards and seven blocks.

Tolu Alabi ’13 was nearly the third Pioneer to earn a double-double in the game, as she finished with 15 points and nine rebounds to go along with four steals.

Krystana Williams had 13 points for the Prairie Fire, who fell to 4-9 in the MWC and 4-14 overall.

The Pioneers, who shot 56.3 percent from the field for the game while holding Knox to 27 percent, were on fire at the start while breaking out to a 12-2 lead. Huey scored the first four of those points on shots in the paint, Alabi added two layups, Briggs scored inside and Huey followed with another close-range basket.

Grinnell built its lead as big as 15 in the first half before Knox rallied to make it a 41-36 game at halftime.

It was still a six-point game early in the second half before Grinnell used an 8-0 run to all but put the contest out of reach. Briggs began things with two free throws and then made a layup. Alabi followed with two more layups to make it 51-37 with 17:34 left.

Knox never got closer than eight the rest of the way.

The Pioneers head to Wisconsin for a pair of road contests this weekend, playing at Ripon College on Friday and St. Norbert College the following day.
