Briggs

In a victory Friday, Grinnell College’s Megan Huey ’12 posted a double-double.

She repeated that feat Saturday afternoon and was joined in that accomplishment by teammate Michelle Briggs ’13 as the Pioneers topped Lawrence University 62-49 at Darby Gymnasium.

Their efforts pushed Grinnell to 7-3 in the Midwest Conference, the Pioneers’ best start in league play since the 2003-04 season. Grinnell is 8-6 in all games.

Briggs had a game-high 14 rebounds Saturday to go along with 12 points, while Huey also tallied 12 points while grabbing 10 boards and also blocking three shots.

Rebecca DeGroot ’14 led the Pioneers, and all scorers, with 17 points and Tolu Alabi ’13 scored 10 points and dished out four assists.

Amber Lisowe scored 13 points to lead the Vikings, who fell to 1-9 in the league and 1-14 in all games.

Grinnell broke the game open early with a 15-point run that turned a slim 10-8 margin into a 25-8 lead at the 6:34 mark of the first half. DeGroot began the run with a jumper, Briggs scored two baskets and Huey another for an 18-8 edge.

After Briggs scored another basket, Kelly Clarke ’13 drained a 3-pointer and DeGroot scored again to put the hosts up by 17.

Grinnell was ahead 33-18 at halftime and never let Lawrence closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

The Pioneers hit the road Wednesday to play Monmouth College. Game time is 5 p.m.
