The Grinnell College women’s basketball team finished one of its best seasons in recent history on a high note Saturday afternoon, knocking off Lake Forest College 59-53 on Senior Day at Darby Gymnasium.
The Pioneers finished the campaign with marks of 11-7 in the Midwest Conference and 12-11 overall, which are both the best records for the squad since the 2003-04 campaign.
Grinnell finished in a four-way tie for third place in the MWC, but missed out on making the league’s postseason tourney on a tie-breaker.
Three Pioneers finished in double figures, led by Rebecca DeGroot ’14 with a game-high 17 points to go along with four steals. Megan Huey ’12 finished with 16 points and seven boards, while Michelle Briggs ’13 had 12 points, seven rebounds and six blocks while hitting 10-of-12 shots from the free throw line.
Tolu Alabi ’13 added seven rebounds and three assists, while Ashley Jeannin ’12 also had three assists.
Gina Ambrose led the Foresters, who are 11-7 in the MWC and 12-11 in all games, with 15 points.
Grinnell led by as many as 13 points in the first half when free throws by Briggs made it 26-13. However, Lake Forest gradually rallied and made it 30-25 by halftime.
The Foresters continued to battle back and grabbed a 39-38 lead with 9:47 remaining. The teams went back and forth after that and were tied at 49-all with 1:57 remaining
However, Huey hit a layup at the 1:05 mark to give Grinnell the lead for good, and Briggs sank two free throws with :40 left to make it 53-49. After a steal by Huey, Jeannin was fouled and made both charity shots for a six-point Grinnell lead with :28 left.
Lake Forest got as close as four a bit later, but the Pioneers sealed the win at the free throw line as Cristal Coleman ’15 and Jeannin each hit a pair of charity shots in the closing seconds.
