Wolf's 38-point output sparks Grinnell women's basketball team to first MWC victory

Hannah Wolf '08 scored 38 points to lead the Grinnell College women's basketball team past Lawrence University 76-63 Friday night, giving the Pioneers their first Midwest Conference victory of the season.

Wolf drained a half-dozen 3-pointers on the night and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line as Grinnell improved to 3-9 overall and 1-4 in the MWC. Wolf's point total of 38 is the eighth-best single-game output in Pioneer history. The hosts, who were led by Kelly Mulcahy's 23 points, fell to 3-9 overall and 0-5 in league play.

Wolf had a double-double on the night with 10 rebounds to go along with three steals. Miki Nakamura '10 was also in double figures with 10 points, Jessica Vaverka '11 had five rebounds and Jodi Watkins '09 came up with two steals.

Grinnell fell behind just once in the game, but took the lead when Wolf hit a 3-pointer to make it 9-6 with 15:18 to go in the first half. However, Lawrence stayed close before the Pioneers took a 29-28 lead into intermission.

There were four ties early in the second half, the last at 43-all with 13:13 showing on the clock, before the Pioneers went on a huge 15-2 run to grab a 58-45 cushion with 9:11 to go in the game. Wolf began the spurt with a 3-ball and jumper and Watkins followed with another trey to make it 51-43. Two free throws by Lawrence cut the margin to six, but Nakamura nailed a 3-pointer, Wolf made two free throws and Nakamura scored a layup to put Grinnell up by 13. Lawrence made one final charge, coming within 64-59 with 3:13 to go, before Grinnell reeled off eight straight points. Kate Norton '11 started things with a free throw, Wolf hit a jumper, Watkins made a 3-pointer and Brianna Gallo '11 sank two free throws for a 72-59 lead with 1:11 to go.

Grinnell turns right around and meets Beloit College on the latter's court at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Pioneers' next home games are Jan. 25 and 26 against Ripon College and Lawrence, respectively.
