Wolf's 3-pointer in waning seconds lifts Pioneer women's basketball team to victory

Hannah Wolf '08 (pictured) drained a 3-pointer from the left wing with just under 3 seconds remaining to give Grinnell College a 60-57 victory over Ripon College in Midwest Conference women's basketball action Friday night at Darby Gymnasium.

The Pioneers, who won for the second time in their past three outings, trailed 57-55 following a 3-pointer by Carisse Zuercher with :57 left. However, Grinnell tied things up on a layup by Kate Norton '11 on Mallory Scharf's '11 assist at the :41 mark. Following a turnover by Staci Dieringer, Grinnell worked the clock and Wolf shook free, took an assist from Scharf and connected from beyond the arc. Ripon tried to get a final shot off but turned over the ball as time evaporated.

Wolf finished with a double-double, scoring a game-high 19 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Scharf added 13 points and Brianna Gallo '11 tallied 10. Gallo also had three assists and two steals, while Norton blocked three shots. Jeni Yaeger led Ripon with 14 points.

With the win, Grinnell improved to 2-5 in the MWC and 4-10 in all games. The Red Hawks dipped to 1-6 in the league and 4-10 overall.

The game was tight the entire first half, with the biggest lead being five by Ripon. Grinnell raced back, though, eventually going up 26-25 on a pair of free throws by Gallo. But Ripon closed out the half with a run to take a 30-28 lead into the locker room. The Red Hawks gained some breathing room in the second half, going up by as many as eight at 46-38 on a jumper by Dieringer. They still led by four at the 5:04 mark before Grinnell went on a 9-2 run for a three-point edge. Wolf had four points during the spurt, Gallo three and Scharf two.

A four-point run by Ripon gave the visitors at 54-53 edge, but Wolf responded with two free throws to put Grinnell on top by a point to set up the exciting finish.

The Pioneers host Lawrence University Saturday at 2 p.m. in Darby Gymnasium. Grinnell defeated Lawrence just last Friday in Appleton, Wis.
