Nationally-ranked Lake Forest College shot out to a 32-19 halftime lead on its way to a 71-49 victory over Grinnell College in women's basketball action Saturday.
Hannah Wolf '08 led Grinnell with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Jodi Watkins '09 added nine points and Jessica Shotts '10 eight. Watkins also had two steals for the Pioneers, who fell to 5-8 in the Midwest Conference and 7-13 overall. Lake Forest, 12-2 in the league and 18-3 in all games, was paced by Claire Schmidt's 16 points.
Grinnell never led as Lake Forest shot out to a 7-0 lead. The Pioneers did draw as close as 9-7, though, as Kate Norton '11 sank a free throw, Mallory Scharf '11 hit a 3-pointer and Laura Burton '11 added another trey. But the hosts countered with an 11-0 run for a 20-7 lead with 8:52 to go in the half.
After trailing by double digits at intermission, Grinnell got as close as seven in the second half when a trey by Wolf made it 34-27 at the 16:27 mark. But a 6-0 run by the hosts gave them the double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Grinnell has a pair of home games coming up, facing Monmouth College at 5 p.m. Monday and Knox College at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
