Pioneer women's basketball team falls in consolation game

Aurora University used a big second half to rally past the Grinnell College women's basketball team 70-59 in the consolation game of the Colorado College Thanksgiving Invitational Saturday afternoon in Colorado Springs.

Hannah Wolf '08 hit six 3-pointers for Grinnell and scored a game-high 25 points en route to earning all-tournament team honors. She also had two steals, as did Miki Nakamura '10, Jodi Watkins '09 and Jessica Shotts '10. Wolf was credited with six rebounds and Laura Burton '08 had four assists. Ashley Daniels led Aurora with 16 points and Kim Voiles added 17 rebounds.

Grinnell built its lead as big as eight in the first half when Wolf's 3-pointer made it 22-14 with 7:03 to go. However, Aurora rallied to take the lead before solo free throws by Jessica Vaverka '11 and Brianna Gallo '11 gave Grinnell a 29-27 lead at intermission.

A 3-pointer by Mallory Scharf '11 at the 19:27 mark of the second half pushed Grinnell's lead to five at 32-27, and the Pioneers still led by four at 34-30 on Scharf's free throws at the 18:00 mark. But Aurora answered with a 12-2 run to take a 42-36 edge with 14:19 left.

Grinnell never regained possession, but hung close and was within 59-57 at the 2:33 mark on a free throw by Vaverka. But Aurora answered with seven consecutive points to pull away. The Pioneers limited Aurora to just 31.9 percent shooting from the field, but shot just 25.8 percent themselves.

The Pioneers, 0-3 on the season, open Midwest Conference play at home next weekend. St. Norbert College visits Darby Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m. Friday and Carroll College plays here at 1 p.m. Saturday.
