St. Norbert clips Grinnell women's basketball team in OT

The Grinnell College women's basketball team came close to nabbing its first victory of the season Friday, but fell just shy as St. Norbert College eked out a 74-68 overtime victory at Darby Gymnasium.

St. Norbert, 2-2 overall and 1-0 in Midwest Conference play, used an 11-5 run in the extra period to pull out the win over the Pioneers, who dipped to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the MWC.

Hannah Wolf '08 moved into second place on the Pioneers' all-time scoring list, as her 12-point output pushed her career total to1,275. That moved her past Missy Sharer, who scored 1,265 points between 1989-91. The all-time leader is Laura Van Sickle, who had 1,810 points between 1986-90.

Jodi Watkins '09 shared team-high scoring honors with 12 points with the aid of 4-of-9 3-point shooting, while Mallory Scharf '11 was also in double figures with 10. Wolf and Miki Nakamura '10 each had seven rebounds, while Wolf also had six assists and two steals. Nakamura also had two steals. St. Norbert was paced by Victoria Le Fevre, who had 19 points.

Grinnell led 32-28 at halftime and built its lead as big as eight at 49-41 on Scharf's 3-pointer with 9:09 left in the game. The Pioneers still led by seven a minute later before the Green Knights put together a 13-2 run to go ahead by four with 5:50 left. Grinnell came back to take two more leads in regulation on a 3-pointer by Watkins with 3:10 to go and free throws by Wolf at the 1:58 mark to make it 63-62. After St. Norbert tied it, both teams had chances to win down the stretch but couldn't convert.

There were two ties once overtime began, the last at 67-all on a free throw by Wolf, but St. Norbert followed with a key four-point run to all but sew up the win as Grinnell never got closer than three.

The Pioneers continue their two-game homestand Saturday when they entertain preseason MWC favorite Carroll College. Game time at Darby Gymnasium is 1 p.m. Grinnell travels to Monmouth College on Wednesday before finishing out the 2007 portion of its slate on Dec. 8 when Central College visits.
