The Grinnell College women’s golf team made history Saturday by winning its own Grinnell College Invitational at Grinnell Golf and Country Club.
The title marked the first tournament crown for the Pioneers in the 17-year history of the program.
Grinnell had a score of 346, beating runner-up Mount Mercy by seven strokes and third-place Millikin by 22 in the six-team field.
Grinnell put six golfers among the top 10 individual finishers, led by runner-up Natalie Klee ’13. She had an 11-over-par 83 and finished just one shot behind individual champion Madison Goodfellow of Mount Mercy in the 36-golfer field.
Mallory Messin ’13 placed fifth with an 86, Hailey Speck ’15 was sixth at 88 and Kayleigh Kresse ’15, Alex Plemmons ’15 and Elaine Teo ’12 tied for seventh with 89s.
Rounding out Grinnell’s lineup were Stephanie Spahr ’14, who was 13th with a 91, and Elizabeth Burnett ’13, 14th with a 93.
Grinnell will look to springboard off its success when it competes in the Midwest Conference Championships this Friday through Sunday at Springfield, Ill.
