Messin finishes 2nd in MWC, is one of 3 Pioneers to earn all-league honors

A trio of Grinnell College women's golfers earned all-league honors Sunday, including individual runner-up Mallory Messin '13, as the Pioneers finished on a strong note at the 2009 Midwest Conference Championships at Aldeen Golf Club in Rockford, Ill.

Grinnell far and away shot the best score of any team Sunday, recording a 363 to finish with a total of 1,131 in the three-day event. That score gave Grinnell its second consecutive runner-up finish in the MWC event. Carroll University won with a total of 1,105.

Messin (left) fired an 83 on Sunday to finish at 266, six shots behind individual champion Angelina Parrinello of Carroll. Other all-conference performers from Grinnell were Natalie Klee '13 (center), who was seventh with a 285, and Elizabeth Burnett '13 (right), ninth at 288.

Other Grinnell golfers were Ashlen Matzdorf '11 with a 294, Elaine Teo '12 with a 311 and Evelyn Anderson '12 with a 343.

Pioneers move into 2nd at MWC Golf Championships

Grinnell College moved up a place and had two golfers remain in the top 10 at the 2009 Midwest Conference Golf Championships on Saturday at Aldeen Golf Course in Rockford, Ill.

The Pioneers trailed Ripon College by a stroke after Friday's action, but moved a comfortable 15 shots ahead into second place after shooting a 379 on Saturday. Grinnell's two-day score of 768 is only bested by leader Carroll University's 720.

Mallory Messin '13 of Grinnell moved from a sixth-place tie into fifth with a round of 90, giving her a two-day score of 183. Natalie Klee '13 is tied for eighth with a 193.

Other Pioneers include Elizabeth Burnett '13 with a 194, Ashlen Matzdorf '11 with a 200, Elaine Teo '12 with a 207 and Evelyn Anderson '12 with a 210.

The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Sunday.

Both golfers fired a 93 and are tied for sixth. Elaine Teo '12 shot a 101 for the Pioneers, Elizabeth Burnett '13 was at 102, Ashlen Matzdorf '11 recorded a 103 and Evelyn Anderson '12 had a 105.

As a team, Grinnell is third with a 389, just one shot behind second-place Ripon College. The team leader is Carroll University with a 357, while Angelina Parrinello of Carroll is the individual leader at 84.

The tournament continues with another 18 holes Saturday and finishes with 18 more on Sunday.

Pioneer golfers take aim at MWC Championships this weekend

After enjoying a successful 2009 campaign, the Grinnell College women's golf team will look to add an exclamation point when it competes in the Midwest Conference Championships slated for Friday through Sunday at Aldeen Golf Club in Rockford, Ill.

The Pioneers, second in the MWC a year ago when they hosted the event, have been led consistently by Mallory Messin '13, who has a season-best 18-hole score of 82. Two other first-years, Elizabeth Burnett and Natalie Klee, have also been strong performers for the Pioneers and both rank among the league's elite.

As a team, the Pioneers scored a season best of 360 at the Monmouth Fighting Scots Invitational. That score ranks third-best in program history.

Illinois College has won six of the past six MWC titles, and earned the automatic NCAA Tournament berth that goes along with it. Action is slated to tee off at 9 a.m. Friday and continue with rounds starting at 10 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

Pioneers place 15th at Millikin Fall Classic

The Grinnell College women's golf team placed 15th at the Millikin University Fall Classic Sunday in Decatur, Ill.

Grinnell shot a 375 on Sunday to finish with a two-day score of 729. Mallory Messin '13 led Grinnell with a two-day score of 178, shooting 88 on Saturday and 90 on Sunday to tie for 54th. Elizabeth Burnett '13 was close behind at 180, with rounds of 86 and 94 to earn a tie for 60th.

Other Pioneer scorers were Natalie Klee '13, who tied for 77th with a 94-94-188, Ashlen Matzdorf '11, who tied for 89th with a 95-99-194 and Elaine Teo '12, who tied for 98th with a 104-97-201.

Angela Gauck of Marian University was the individual champ with a 9-over-par 153 and the team winner was Rend Lake Community College, which shot a 627.

Grinnell travels to Waukesha, Wis., this coming weekend to participate in the 2009 Midwest Conference Championships. Action begins Friday at Aldeen Golf Club and continues through Saturday and Sunday.

Burnett leads Pioneers on opening day of Millikin Tournament

Elizabeth Burnett '13 fired an 86 on the opening day to spark the Grinnell College women's golf team at the Millikin University Fall Classic on Saturday.

Burnett had a 45 on the front nine and 41 on the back, and is tied for 40th individually. As a team, Grinnell is 13th in the 19-team field with a score of 363. Mallory Messin '13 is next in line for Grinnell with a 42-46-88, which ties her for 50th, and Natalie Klee '13 is tied for 78th with a 47-47-94.

Rounding out the Pioneers are Ashlen Matzdorf '11, who is tied for 81st with a 47-48-95, and Elaine Teo '12, who is 104th with a 53-51-104. Lindsey Haines of Illinois Wesleyan and Jennifer Lawson of Truman State University are tied for first with 76s. The team leader is Rend Lake Community College with a 312.

The tournament concludes on Sunday.

Pioneer golfers place 15th at Illinois Wesleyan event

The Grinnell College women's golf team fired a two-day score of 731 to place 15th at the Illinois Wesleyan College Fall Classic Saturday.

The Pioneers bettered their score on the second day, shooting a 363 after going 368 on Saturday. Leading Grinnell was Mallory Messin '13, who shot 171 (83-88) to tie for 41st.

Elizabeth Burnett '13 tied for 67th with a 179 (93-86) and Natalie Klee '13 tied for 86th with a 189 (101-88). Rounding out the Pioneers were Elaine Teo '12, who tied for 94th with a 197 (96-101), Evelyn Anderson '12, who was 102nd with a 200 (99-101) and Ashlen Matzdorf '11, who tied for 103rd with a 201 (96-105).

Washington University won the meet with a 644, while Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Jessica Urban was the individual champ at 146 for the two-day event.

Grinnell is slated to compete in the Millikin Fall Classic next weekend.

Pioneers record 3rd-best score in program history

With Mallory Messin '13 (pictured) leading the way, the Grinnell College women's golf team enjoyed one of its best days in program history at the Monmouth College Fighting Scots Invitational on Saturday.

Grinnell had a team score of 360, third-best in program history, on its way to a fourth-place finish in the 14-team field. Messin tallied a score of 82 to tie for fifth place, firing consecutive nine-hole scores of 41.

She was followed by Elizabeth Burnett '13, who fired a 44-47-91 to tie for 26th place, and Natalie Klee '13, who had consecutive 46s for a 92 that tied her for 29th. Rounding out Grinnell's scorers were Ashlen Matzdorf '11, who shot 48-47-95 for 39th place, and Evelyn Anderson '12, who fired 57-61-118 for 80th place.

Maryville University won the meet with a 320 and boasted the individual champ in Kayla Eckelkamp, who had a 73.

Grinnell will play in the Illinois Wesleyan Fall Classic next weekend.

Pioneers claim 5th at Knox Invitational

The Grinnell College women's golf placed a strong fifth in a field of 14 teams at the Knox College Invitational Friday.

The Pioneers recorded a score of 372 and were paced by Mallory Messin '13, who shot a 14-over-par 86 with a 46 on the front nine and 40 on the back. That tied her for 10th individually.

Natalie Klee '13 tied for 18th with a 44-46-90, Elizabeth Burnett '13 tied for 22nd with a 46-47-93, Ashlen Matzdorf '11 tied for 46th with a 50-53-103 and Evelyn Anderson '12 tied for 56th with a 50-59-109.

The champ was Maryville University's Kayla Eckelkamp, who had a 76. Maryville also won the team title with a 329.

The Pioneers play in the Monmouth College Invitational on Saturday.

Messin leads the way for Pioneers at IC

Mallory Messin '13 fired an 86 to lead the Grinnell College women's golf team at the Illinois College Invitational on Saturday. Sunday's second round was rained out, meaning Saturday's results served as the final standings.

Messin had a 39 on the front nine and 47 on the back for her score, which put her in a tie for 28th place. She was followed by Natalie Klee '13, who had a 44-43 for an 87, which put her in a tie for 32nd.

Rounding out the Pioneer scorers were Elizabeth Burnett '13, who tied for 57th with a 43-50-93, Ashlen Matzdorf '11, who was 76th with a 49-51-100 and Evelyn Anderson '12, who was 78th with a 53-50-103.

Individual champs were Lindsey Haines of Illinois Wesleyan and Hannah Buck of Washington University with 74s. Illinois Wesleyan was the team champ with a 309, 10 shots ahead of runner-up William Woods. Grinnell was ninth at 366.

Grinnell travels to Galesburg, Ill, next Friday to compete in the Knox College Invitational.

The Grinnell College women's golf team finished its 2008 campaign in impressive fashion Sunday with another record-setting round and a runner-up finish at the Midwest Conference Championships.

One day after shooting a program-record score of 358, the Pioneers did even better with a 350 Sunday on the Grinnell Golf and Country Club links. Two Pioneers, Jordan Heguy '09 (left) and Amy Livingston '09 (right), also collected all-conference honors by placing among the top 10. Heguy was sixth with a three-day score of 266 after shooting an 85 Sunday, while Livingston claimed eighth with a 269 after also shooting 85. She was tied with one other golfer for eighth, but claimed the higher place on a tie-breaker.

Another Pioneer, Stephanie Goggin '10, tied for 10th place with a 270 after shooting 92 on Sunday, but missed out on all-conference honors on the tie-breaker. Ashlen Matzdorf '11 was 21st with a 289 after shooting an 88 Sunday, Elaine Teo '12 was 22nd with a 291 after firing a 99 and Evelyn Anderson '12 tied for 25th with a 299 after shooting a 104.

Grinnell had a team score of 1078 and was bettered only by Illinois College's 1028. That allowed the Lady Blues to claim their sixth team title in a row. Carroll University placed third with a 1115, Ripon College was fourth at 1118 and Monmouth College wound up fifth at 1167.

The individual champion was Meredith Robinson of Illinois College, who had a 254. Teammate Ashley Edwards was second, five strokes behind Robinson.

Pioneers post record-setting day at MWC Women's Golf Championships

The Grinnell College women's golf team enjoyed a stellar day Saturday at the 2008 Midwest Conference Championships at Grinnell Golf and Country Club.

The Pioneers shot a program-best score of 358 to retain second place in the team race. Grinnell was just six shots behind leader Illinois College's Saturday total after finishing 26 shots behind the Lady Blues during Friday's opening day. The 358 on Saturday bettered Grinnell's previous program best of 362.

Amy Livingston '09 (left) had the Pioneers' best round on Saturday with a 13-over-par 85, while Jordan Heguy '09 (right) was not far behind at 87. Stephanie Goggin '10 added a 91, Evelyn Anderson '12 had a 95, Elaine Teo '12 shot 96 and Ashlen Matzdorf '11 tallied 1 08.

Through two days, Goggin is in fourth place individually with a 178. Heguy is tied for seventh at 181, Livingston sits in 14th at 184, Teo is tied for 20th with a 192, Anderson is 22nd at 195 and Matzdorf is tied for 26th with a 201.

Ashley Edwards of Illinois College kept the lead with a 165, five shots ahead of Rachel Talpers of Knox College and Meredith Robinson of Illinois College. Illinois College, seeking its sixth team title in a row, has a 696 through two days. Grinnell, with its 728, holds a comfortable lead over third-place Carroll College, which is at 749. Ripon College is fourth place, while St. Norbert College and Knox are tied for fifth.

The tournament concludes Sunday, with tee time set for 8 a.m.
