With yet another dominating performance, the Grinnell College women’s soccer team moved closer to a share of the Midwest Conference title Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Ripon College at Springer Field.
The Pioneers, who had 21 players see action during the contest, moved to 6-1-1 in the league and 9-5-2 overall. Ripon dipped to 4-4-1 in the MWC and 7-10-1 in all games.
Grinnell led 1-0 at halftime, with a goal in the 31st minute by Becca Carter ’12. From just a bit to the right, Carter delivered a 35-yard free kick past the Ripon keeper and into the left side of the net for her second goal of the season.
Grinnell made it 2-0 in the 57th minute on Julia Sauerhaft’s ’15 second goal of the year. Rachel Koester ’13 got the assist as she sent the ball to Sauerhaft, who got by the keeper and shot into the goal from close range.
Grinnell made it 3-0 in the 82nd minute. Abby Jaeger ’14 was credited with the assist when she delivered a corner kick into Kathryn Vincent ’13, who headed the ball into the goal for her second score of the year.
The Pioneers won the shots battle 23-10, with Jaeger taking five shots and Rachel Weinstein ’13 and Vincent taking three apiece. Koester, Carter, Sarah Jensen ’15 and Kirstin Louthan ’12 had two shots each.
Jordan Young ’14 worked the complete game for Grinnell at keeper and had four saves.
Grinnell closes out the regular-season Sunday when Knox College visits Springer Field. The Senior Day event starts at 11 a.m.
