The Grinnell College men's and women's swimming and diving teams begin their 2009-10 campaigns Friday night with a 5 p.m. dual meet against the University of Nebraska Swim Club.
Head Coach Erin Hurley and the Pioneer women's swimming and diving program will look to capture an unprecedented 12th consecutive Midwest Conference title in 2009-10. A strong contingent of defending conference title holders return. Amy Hadow '10 (three titles), Meghan McDoniel '10 (five titles), and Chloe Moryl '10 (one title), along with Morgan Bober '12 (one title) and Kelly Bruce '12 (two titles), will begin the hunt for team title number 21 in the 32 years of MWC Women's Championship opportunity. The Pioneers will have their work cut out for them as they lost the 2007 and 2008 MWC swimmer of the year, and seven-time conference title holder, Valerie Stimac `09 to graduation.
Sprint Freestyle:
This will be the first test for the Pioneers as some finalists from last year have graduated or will be studying abroad this spring. This shift will give opportunities to Jacqueline Anderson '11 (second in the 50 in '08) and conference title-holder Chloe Moryl (first in 2008) to claim the top spots on the podium. Emily Summers '10 will also be relied upon for strong performances in her distances. Casey Strickler '12 should not be overlooked as she could be a contender in the sprints and middle distances. Last year, the Pioneers captured all three of the relay distances and will need these upperclassmen to step up to have a repeat in 2010. First-years to join this crew and push the Pioneers along will be Lindsay Schwartz '13 and Alex Staff '13.
Distance Freestyle:
Morgan Horton '11 will return to challenge for titles in the middle distance freestyle events as last year she was runner-up in the 500. Casey Strickler and Martha Reilly '12 will also look to add valuable points as they finished fifth and 13th in the 500 in 2009. In the longer race, Reilly was more dominant as she placed fourth. Carly Kruse '10, Hannah Lytle '11 and first-years Jenna Beeler '13 and Alex Staff look to add much-needed depth in these events.
Backstroke:
Another event where most of the returning finalists have either graduated or will be off-campus, the Pioneers will look to versatility in their ranks to fill depth in the backstroke events. Caitlin Short '12 (sixth in the 100 and 10th in the 200) and Lauren O'Hair '12 could start the Pioneers rolling. Surprises could come from Amy Hadow and Hannah Lytle in the longer race, while Meghan McDoniel and Morgan Horton could shake things up in the sprint distance.
Breaststroke:
Morgan Bober, the returning conference champion, school record holder, and NCAA provisional qualifier, will be joined by the talents of Meghan McDoniel (titles in 2007, 2008). Contributions from Lily Camp'10, Emily Bajet '12, Katherine Chung '12 and Lindsay Schwartz will be highly relied upon to rack up top points in these events. If the Pioneers can break Casey Strickler away from the freestyle events, they will not overlook the possibilities of her contributions in the breaststroke.
Butterfly:
The Pioneers will look for complete domination from Amy Hadow as she strives for her fourth consecutive title in the 100. Joining her in the title haul could be Morgan Horton as she defends her 2009 title in the 200. The supporting crew of Emily Bajet (fourth in the 100, fifth in the 200 in 2009), Martha Reilly (sixth in the 200), and Carly Kruse in the 200, as well as Jenny Peek '13 in both distances, could provide solid points that the Pioneers will need to capture their team title.
Individual Medley:
Conference title holder Meghan McDoniel (2007, 2008 in the 200) and last-year top point scorers Morgan Bober (second in the 200) and Emily Bajet (eighth in the 200) bring back experience and power in the shorter IM distance. In the 400 race, runner-up Morgan Horton and Caitlin Short (sixth in 2009) will be strong forces. They will get significant back-up from Jenna Beeler and Carly Kruse.
Diving:
Returning two-time conference title holder and provisional national qualifier, Kelly Bruce, is back, healthy, and ready to make an entrance on the national stage. She could have one of Grinnell's strongest teams behind her as Hannah LaFollette '11, Balyssa Bell '12, and first-year Allison Miller '13 all have potential to place in the top five in both events. Last year, LaFollette was runner-up to Bruce on the one-meter and three-meter boards, while Bell finished fifth on both boards.
The Grinnell College swimming and diving teams recently collected academic accolades from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.
The Pioneer women's squad was named a Division III Scholar All-American Team.
Additionally, a trio of Grinnell men and women earned Individual Scholar All-American Honorable Mention honors in Division III. They included Kelly Bruce '12 and Morgan Bober '12 from the women's team and Cyrus Mistry '11 from the men's squad.
