The Grinnell College women’s tennis team will seek its seventh Midwest Conference title in the past eight seasons when the Pioneers open the league meet Friday morning.
Grinnell, 11-0 on the season, plays Lawrence University at 8:30 a.m. in Rockford, Ill. Grinnell enters the tourney as the top seed in the South Division after posting a 3-0 mark to claim its ninth division crown in a row. Lawrence is the second seed from the North, going 3-1 in the division and 10-2 overall.
At the same time, the North’s top seed, St. Norbert College, takes on South second seed Lake Forest.
The championship is slated for 1:30 p.m. with that winner earning the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championships.
The tourney continues Saturday at Madison, Wis., with MWC doubles play and concludes Sunday with singles play.
Grinnell boasted seven of the nine flight champions last year. Constanza Alarcon ’13 has won four titles in her career, two in singles and two in doubles, while Clothilde Thirouin ’14 and Tatyana Sukharnikova ’12 have won two apiece.
