The Grinnell College women’s tennis team used a big rally to post another victory during its spring break trip to Orlando, Fla.
The Pioneers improved to 16-0 on the season by edging SUNY New Paltz 5-4 on Tuesday. Both teams were NCAA D-III National Tournament qualifiers last season.
Grinnell fell behind 4-2 in singles play and then had to rally with a doubles sweep to squeak out the victory.
Singles winners for Grinnell were Laura Krull ’13 at No. 3 and Emma Macdonald ’14 at No. 6.
The Pioneers then rolled in doubles play with victories from the No. 1 team of Sadhana Athreya-14-Krull, Toby Cain ’12- Macdonald at No. 2 and Shirlene Luk ’15 and Clothilde Thirouin ’14 at No. 3.
SUNY New Paltz fell to 9-5 with the loss.
“This is a great win for our team against a quality opponent,” said Grinnell coach Andy Hamilton. “For us to come back and sweep doubles after falling behind 4-2 is a great accomplishment. I’m really proud of the fact that our No. 1 doubles team of Sadhana and Laura, which trailed 3-6, was able to come back to gain the victory.”
Grinnell will meet up with Carthage College on Wednesday.
