The Grinnell College women’s tennis team remained perfect in 2011-12 on Monday, topping Calvin College 9-0 at Orlando, Fla.
Singles winners for Grinnell were Sadhana Athreya ’14, Shirlene Luk ’15, Laura Krull ’13, Toby Cain ’12, Clothilde Thirouin ’14 and Emma Macdonald ’14. All won in two sets, and Luk and Krull gave up just one game apiece while Athreya lost just two.
In doubles, the Pioneers got wins from the teams of Athreya-Krull, Cain-Macdonald and Luke-Emily Groth ’14.
Grinnell is now 15-0 on the season, while Calvin fell to 1-5.
The Pioneers take on SUNY New Paltz on Tuesday.
“I was particularly pleased with the way Sadhana, Shirlene and Laura played in singles,” said Grinnell coach Andy Hamilton. “Their success certainly bodes well for the future of this team during the spring.
“After a couple of matches in Florida where we had the upper hand, the next few days figure to be tough with SUNY New Paltz, an NCAA qualifier last season, and Carthage, one of the better teams in our region,” he added. “I expect the matches will be difficult and very close. I’m anxious for our players to step on the court and compete against these squads.”
